UFC 123: Rampage vs Machida

November 20, 2010 at The Palace of Auburn Hills, MI.

Main Card:
* Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida
* Matt Hughes vs. B.J. Penn
* Gerald Harris vs. Maiquel Falcao
* Phil Davis vs. Tim Boetsch
* George Sotiropoulos vs. Joe Lauzon

On Spike:
* Matt Brown vs. Brian Foster
* Aaron Simpson vs. Mark Munoz

Preliminary Card:
* Karo Parisyan vs. Dennis Hallman
* Darren Elkins vs. Edson Barboza
* Paul Kelly vs. T.J. O'Brien
* Tyson Griffin vs. Nik Lentz

Card finally taking shape. My early FOTN prediction is Sotiropoulos vs Lauzon. And early reports indicate Sotiropoulos may get a titleshot in Syndey if he wins.

Extremely happy Karo is back.

Machida is going to tear Rampage up. Rampage has forgotten his wrestling so he has become nothing more than a plodding slugger who relies upon landing a home run shot. Unless Machida gets careless I see him picking Rampage apart on the feet.

Awesome card. Very excited to see Karo back too. He's one of my favourites and hopefully he's conquered his issues with painkillers for good.

I think this might be Rampage's worst possible matchup. Machida's defense-oriented style works perfectly against guys, like Rampage, who try to go for the big knockouts. I just hope Rashad wins the belt so we won't have to see Machida vs Shogun III in the near future.

I think Machida will finish him.

Question: If he does, would you consider him a legend? Franklin, Penn @ 187, Evans, Ortiz, and Jackson would be among his victims. It's very hard to find that type of resume.

This Machida hype is wild. First ill point out the minor inaccuracy, he was 225 and BJ was 191. Thats a 34 pound difference, add to the fact that it went the distance, its hardly a notable fight. BJ is a legend at 55 or even 70 but not at HW/LHW, hes just a bad ass who will take any fight like Hendo. And you could argue Rich for all his training is a smallish LHW too, if it wasnt for the Spider he would still be a MW.

Beating Ortiz is hardly credible anymore, since '06 hes won three times, the decision Forrest, and twice he beat Ken Shamrock (lol). His last four fights, he drew Rashad which was good, but losses to Liddell, Machida, and the Forrest rematch.

I agree hes a great fighter, but styles make fights and Shoguns style is the perfect counter. If he cant beat him, then being the second best LHW with one title defense (the controversy!) doesnt make you a legend. He'll have an impressive resume, but not legendary.

Here for arguments sake, who knows at 19-4 if Shogun will ultimately be one, but look at his.
Gono(55er), Rampage/Lil Nog/Arona/Diabate/Liddell/Machida(twice?)/Randleman (all legit 205ers at their time of the fight), Coleman/Overeem x2 (both guys fought at HW, one being the Strikeforce HW champ). Most of those by 1st rd (T)KOs. Pride MW GP champion, UFC Champ.

I think "legend" is a bit strong. He doesn't even have a legit title defense yet. Plus some of those wins are overrated by the name. Ortiz and Rampage (assuming he wins) are well past their primes and he fought Penn at around 220.

As for the card itself, I think Machida is a lock, same with Phil Davis. I dont know what to make of the Karo fight, but if Hallman wins, hes definately getting Hughes next. Ill take Griffin/MacDonald/Kelly. Not really a great card, but these usually turn out to be the best ones.

FOTN Sotir/Lauzon, I think you have to take George here. I dont believe he gets title shot tho because he has to beat one of BJ/KenFlo/(Edgar/Maynard loser)/maybe even throw in Jim Miller.

Hughes Penn is an interesting addition.

This card has a lot of potential.

The Lauzon vs GS fight is going to be fantastic I think, possibily one of the fights I'd most look forward to all year. Though have to say I am on the side of GS winning.

Rampage vs Machida, I am undecided over this fight. I can't decide if Machida will have lost that "air of invicibility" about him, but I do think Rampage's style could fall right into Machida's "trap" so to speak. Style vs style could be the factor here, and Rampage is hardly a rush down versatile striker like Shogun (who throws great strikes from every limb quickly, Rampage more of a wind up and hit slugger these days). Not sure if Machida will KO/TKO Rampage.

He lost that after the first Shogun fight

Im actually interested to see the Hughes vs Penn fight, just to see the gut check by Penn.
If Penn losses this, he's a souless corpse and clearly lost his interest in fighting.
Penn's paying 1.7, that's pretty good numbers for the guy.

I'm shocked, I didn't realize we have 122 this weekend and 123 the weekend after. That's amazing! Not to mention the WEC event this Thursday and a UFN on Dec 4th.
