Sonnen Tests Positive for PEDs at UFC 117

Post#1 » by singh_shady » Sun Sep 19, 2010 4:25 pm

:o

According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Chael Sonnen has been notified that he failed post-fight drug screening following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, which was held Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

“[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday,” Dodd told Sherdog.com shortly after the Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora boxing match ended Saturday night in Los Angeles.

In a conversation the day before, Dodd declined to comment on the situation, other than answering that all fighters from UFC 117 had passed drugs-of-abuse scans, but that the commission was still waiting on performance-enhancing drug screens from the event.

Dodd did not state which banned substance was red-flagged, but with a clean drugs-of-abuse scan it is clear the positive test was for a performance-enhancing substance.

The last major UFC banned-substance case in the state centered on UFC 73’s lightweight title match, which saw both competitors -- Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca -- test positive for PEDs. Both fighters were suspended for one year and fined, though Sherk appealed and had his suspension shortened to six months.

Sonnen is staring at a long layoff if he elects not to appeal or is denied. He was scheduled to rematch Silva Feb. 6 in Las Vegas, but that fight may be delayed or scrapped in light of these allegations.

Text messages to Sonnen went unreturned.

His manager Matt Lindland told Sherdog.com that he was cornering a fighter on the East Coast and had no knowledge of the positive test results.

Silva’s manager Ed Soares, who engaged in some heated exchanges via the media in the build up to the fight, was stunned when asked for his reaction.

“If it’s true, I feel really bad for him,” said Soares. “I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night. It is just a shame it will be tarnished.”

It's a good thing that they found that "Mexican Imposter" who posed as Chael and claimed that Lance Armstrong gave himself cancer due to PED. Otherwise, man there would be egg on his face!

Crazy. The sad thing is that Chael's going to really believe that if he just denies long enough, spins hard enough, that he'll be able to BS his way out of this one. The whole Lance Armstrong thing is a good precedent for what to expect..."some hispanic guy"...isn't that a south park episode?

It seems as though it's only the california commission that actually gets some of these guys. I fear that it's pretty common. I read some testimony from an expert on MMA PED testing and it sounds pretty weak. Your default assumption has to be that most of these guys are just getting away with it.

There's a thread on sherdog where a sequence of pics from his last four fights are compared. Post-Maia, there's a steady increase in Chael's back-acne, which can serve as an unscientific but valid form of evidence that supports the test results.

And yet another blemish on this a-hole.

So all that talk and he might've been juicing?

Weak.

And there goes his career. Just as he was becoming a marketable fighter, this happens. What a joke.

hahaha, I'm always amazed when guy's test positive for PED's in this day and age. Especially in the UFC... it isn't like there's any grey area's. All guys get tested post fight. But Sonnen is a republican, so nobody would accuse him of being smart.

Man. Soares says it himself, Sonnen'd just earned everyone's respect. This is lousy.

LOL @ funkatron.

It will be interesting to see how the UFC will react once the details come out.. When Sherk tested positive he insisted that it was due to tainted supplements that were cross contaminated (this may have been true). He also claimed that the lab mishandled the vials used in the testing and that residuals from previous positive tests could have remained in the vials when he was tested (this was just laughable). EIther way, Dana stood by him 100%. He publicly backed Sherk's claims and gave him an immediate title shot upon his reinstation.. I wonder if Dana will do the same now that Sonnen has become a marketable star..

Other notable fighters that tested positive.

Josh Barnett - Boldenone, Nandrolone, and Fluoxymesterone

Tim Sylvia - Stanozolol

KIMO LEOPOLDO - Stanozolol

NATE MARQUARDT - Nandrolone

Vitor Belfort - Nandrolone

Pawel Nastula - Nandrolone

Stephan Bonnar - Boldenone

Kit Cope - Boldenone

Royce Gracie - Nandrolone

Phil Baroni - Boldenone and Stanozolol

Sean Sherk - Nandrolone

Hermes Franca - Drostanolone

Dennis Hallman - Drostanolone and Nandrolone

Alexandre Noguieria - Boldenone

Antonio BIG FOOT Silva - Boldenone

Edwin Dewees - A massive amount of Nandrolone

Chris Leben - Stanozolol

KIRILL SIDELNIKOV - Stanozolol

KEN SHAMROCK - 19-Norandrosterone, 19-Noretiocholanolone, and Stanozolol

Chael Sonnen: ?

Honorable mentions:
- Jeff Monson, for openly admitting past steroid use (even though he was never caught before or after a fight) and suggesting that steroids should be legalized.

- Kevin Randleman, for submitting a urine sample that lacked human hormones, following his submission loss to Mauricio Rua at PRIDE 32. Said NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer: “It was either allegedly non-human urine or urine from a dead human being.” Randleman admitted that he submitted a fake sample because of the large amounts of painkillers and antibiotics he was taking at the time due to a lung infection. He was suspended from competition for one year.

Fun fact: Of the aforementioned fighters who were accused of steroid use after fights, 11 were successful in those fights, while 18 were unsuccessful. So, the jury’s still out in that whole “competitive advantage” thing…

Great article, I suggest you read it sometime. I wonder what animal Randleman used?

Why am I not surprised? The people with the biggest mouthes often end up being the biggest hypocrites. Get ready for a year of denial from Chael. And kiss his title shot goodbye. If he can't win WITH PEDs, then he definitely isnt going to win with out.

You can't really gauge it because in all likelihood, many, if not most, of their opponents were also using PEDs, they just didn't get caught.

I don't care for the guy, but calling him an awful person might be a little extreme. I think he just got way too caught up in his sudden popularity.

As far as the PEDs, it's kind of disappointing to see such a great fight tainted, but it also feels like sweet justice after everything he said.

Does this mean no rematch? The 1st fight was awsome, Dana should let Sonen get all juccied up and let them go at it again, it sure beats Crocop/Mir. If you are going to let James Toney fight Couture I dont see what the problemo is.

His comments about Lance Armstrong sure doesn't make him a good person.
