MMA - Why I dont like it

Post#1 » by Quiet-Storm » Fri Oct 15, 2010 5:05 pm

Not trying to offend any MMA fans, so please don't take it like that.

I'm a boxing fan, but a fight fan in general, and recentl i've been trying to watch more MMA but for some reason I find it boring as hell.

When the mma fighters are on their feet trading punches and kicks, it is MORE exciting than boxing. But 95% of the fights I watch, that only lasts a few fleeting moments here and there.

Then it turns into two dudes jumping on each other and rolling around on the ground for 5 minutes.
Theres nothing entertaining about people trying to win by submissions and tap outs.

I'm not going to go as far as Bernard Hopkins who called it "Gay porn" but I will admit its a bit fruity and quite boring overall.

It would be awesome if there was a big MMA where submission holds were not allowed, and you had to win by knock outs or accumulated strike points.

Where any time fighters dropped to the ground and got tangled up, the referee treated it like a clinch in boxing and broke it up. That would eliminate styles like boxing and brazilian jujitsu for example, but it would be a hell of a lot more entertaining.

Anyway whats your take on it? Do you find all the ground stuff in MMA boring or do you like it?

It is going to take a while for people new to the sport to be able to follow the ground game and understand it. I'm sure it just looks like 2 dudes rolling around, but there is a lot more going on than that.

Ground fighting can be just as exciting as a stand up war if both guys are trying to finish.

Uh, go watch K-1 if you only like punching and kicking. We like MMA because it is mixed martial arts.

+1, it sounds like kickboxing might be something you'd find entertaining.

With MMA, styles make fights. Hypothetically, a guy who is well-rounded can take out a one-dimensional (but faaaaaar superior) striker if he sticks to the correct gameplan, which in this case would be to ground the striker and ride out a decision or to attempt to finish on the ground. These fights can get pretty boring because I find that most fighters understand striking fundamentals. When it's clear early onthat a fighter is neglecting it, like you'll notice a guy threatening to attack but keeping his chin up (like the recent KZ/Roop fight), these fights tend to end in spectacular knockouts. Like Bisping/Henderson last year... Followers of MMA could see a vicious KO coming from miles away and it was just a case of it getting timed by the striker. The combatants are essentially "perfect" fighters, so that their weaknesses become evident to fans. I like MMA because it pits certain styles against other styles and generally, the best fights are when both guys are known for a specific discipline... A great recent example of awesome, elite-level groundwork to check out if you have time is the Jason MacDonald and Demian Maia fight. Both guys are high-level grapplers (Maia's one of the best, period) and were trying to tear limbs off.

Looks like a troll thread to me. No offense, of course.

I had the same thinking when I was first watching MMA, I was a boxing fan first. But I've learned a lot over the past 3 yrs, watching all UFC cards, WEC cards, UFC unleasheds on spike over that span. Now, boxing is boring to me, with MMA there are more areas of fighting skills, hence Mixed Martial Arts .

MMA is by far the most dynamic combat sport.

If you think the dudes are "just rolling around" it just shows your ignorance of other types of martial arts besides striking.

Stick to boxing, or else try K-1.

I see the OP point, with influx of wrestlers in the game there is a whole lotta leg humpin going on these days and its plain boring, but to mee there is nothing more entertaining to watch a guy like George Sot go to work with his smooth passes and awsome top control, or watching Maiia work off his back now that is something anyone who enjoys combat sports can enjoy. I agree wrestlers are ruining the technical aspect of MMA.

The description of "just rollin' around" kind of implies a jits game to me though.

Wrestlers do very little rollin' and a whole lot of sitting in guard.

But thats my point. You see very little of the standup versions of martial arts, and im sure that variety makes up a huge portion of the martial arts around the world. Instead MMA is dominated by wrestling and Brazilian JJ. You can type in a tag like MMA fight in youtube and randomly watch videos and the vast vast majority of the overall time in those videos is all taking place in slow movements on the ground. Seems more like Wrestling with a few moments of punching and kicking before the wrestling begins.

Again i'm not trolling lol. I'm genuinely curious and interested in getting into MMA. I love sports in general and fighting sports in particular. I used to watch K1 but it doesn't get enough coverage. You lose interest in a sport when half the time you have no idea who the fighters and the backstory to the match up is which is what happens with sports like K1 which get little coverage.

This quote and the comments about ground fighting being boring show that MMA is probably not for you. The most exciting finish of the year has been Anderson Silva's triangle on Chael Sonnen. However, I see plenty of stand up. If you're genuinely interested you just need to watch more. And watch more than the UFC. The WEC just put on a killer card that nobody could call boring.

You may just be seeing the wrong fights. There is still a ton of striking in MMA. Right now MMA is a good mixture of wrestling, BJJ, and boxing (with a smattering of Judo and Muay Thai). The rest of the martial arts have pretty much been proven ineffective for MMA.

Strikeforce the other night had a 5 round slugfest between Diaz and Noons in the main event.

Based on your posts you have no interest in understanding or appreciating the ground game. Which is a vital part to MMA. So I doubt you are really interested.

You basically said "Well I'm not calling it gay..Just kind of gay."

Sounds like a troll to me.

Get HDNet and watch K-1 instead. Your "But I don't know who anyone is" argument is pretty stupid. There are resources out there.

Learn to love MMA OP, because in 10 years, boxing will be a dead sport.

"Hey Guys,

I know this is BassFishingForums.com, but I just wanted to say that I really don't like fishing.

Listen, I love lakes and have a salmon plank on my BBQ right now...etc"

Why would you even be reading an MMA forum if you don't like it? I don't get that.

Guys chill, some people just dont like grappling. It can get boring *cough* fitch *cough*, but if you learn how the ground game works, it will help you enjoy the sport that much more.

Btw, people need to stop comparing boxing and mma, seriously, stop it.

i can understand calling it boring when you have the lay & pray types that will hold a guy down and inflict no damage and not look for submissions either. But then there's guys that would pound you on the ground or look for a submission. When guys are looking to finish fights it's exciting

if you know a little about BJJ then you'll love this fight....if not, then it's probably gay porn to you.

Cause i love boxing and if you devoted 10% of the brain cells you use for crappy sarcasm towards reading properly you would know the forum is for "Boxing and mixed martial arts"

And so the point of all this is that you don't like MMA, right?

But if MMA changed so that it was more up your alley, you'd like it.

Deep stuff.
