Official UFC 129 (Toronto) Discussion Thread

Looks like we are getting the first taste of how big the card could be for this historic UFC event. :D Thinking about it, I like this fight if it does get finalized and confirmed.

EDIT:
Official Event Information is on page 8.

I have no interest in that fight whatsoever. Or any Couture fight.

I think I said this in the Couture retirement thread, but I was actually more interested in this fight when Machida looked like a riddle nobody could solve. Now that he's not so unstoppable anymore, he's just another fighter...but one who is much better than Randy Couture at this point.

If it's just another fight on the card, then whatever, there could be much worse fights, but you know if this fight happens it will be a co-main event at least.

Ugh. Give Machida the loser of Bader/Jones. More fresh blood instead of the same top six or seven guys fighting each other.

Good Lord I hope this fight doesn't happen, especially on the Toronto card....

No interest in seeing Randy hug Machida to death while Lyoto backtracks the entire time...

Well Cain vs JDS was also supposed to be on this card too but the fight got canceled when Cain got injured. Maybe they will give JDS another opponent since he says he doesent want to wait.

GSP/Sheilds to headline this card. Couture/Machida will be co-main event,

I'm tired of GSP fighting in Canada, will be his third title defense there.

What's it to you?

If you wouldn't be going to the event anyway, why do you care?

The atmosphere will be awesome, which is pretty much all that should matter for a TV viewer.

Unless you're worried about some kind of competitive advantage, in which case...LOL.

I care because I'm tired of seeing him fight in his hometown , just like I'm tired of seeing Bisping fight in England. Wasn't trashing the city, no need for you to take it personal and get your panties in a bunch.

But what's the difference to you?

How does it really negatively affect the fight experience for you?

I like seeing fighters fight in an environment that will produce a great atmosphere. Of course I'm glad to see Toronto get an event and to have GSP fight there, but I would say the same about any fighter and city.

Because sometimes the judges tend to favor the home town fighter, see Bisping/Hamill fight.

The pop GSP is going to get at the Dome in April is going to be worth the price of admission.

If there is a Dog, please let George finish Shields.

You mean when the American judges gave it to Bisping and the British judges gave it to Hamill?

Bad decisions can happen anywhere.

Are you upset that Gray Maynard gets to fight in Las Vegas?

I actually don't mind this matchup... what bothers me is the co-main event. Losing a heavyweight championship fight and getting it replaced with this is unacceptable.

I don't see what argument you can possibly be making. He always gets to fight in his hometown. How is that not an advantage? In atmosphere, in all the subjective calls a ref can be pushed into, in judging. His opponents never do.

We see refs get pushed into standing fighters up all the time, for example. The crowd flow effects things.

It's fair to point out the lack of equity. No other sport would allow it. Faber fights in Sacramento, Bisping in England, GSP in Quebec/Canada.

I like this match-up. Two technicians, two tacticians. You're dumb if you don't see it.

This actually will push me to go see the event live, strangely enough. It's one of only a few match-ups that would have me actually go. Couldn't care less about seeing GSP fight in person. I really want to see this.

He doesn't always get to fight in his hometown. Even accepting that Toronto or anywhere in Canada is his hometown (it isn't), he will have fought there 3 times in his 18 fight UFC career. I know the percentage has kicked up quite a bit since the UFC wasn't doing shows in Canada until a few years ago, but it's still only about 1 out of every 3 fights.

How would no other sport allow it? It happens all the time.

I think a lot of the aspects of home advantage are overblown anyway. We do see refs/judges get influenced all the time...but, everywhere. I think feeding off the crowd is highly exaggerated. He's not Hulk Hogan. There's something to the geographical advantage, but that's nothing a well prepared opponent can't overcome.
