LOL, Shawn Tompkins

I DLd a torrent the other day with a collection of his MMA fights. LOL! He was KOd in the first round in each fight. His career record is 0-4, 3 losses by TKO - one by sub from strikes.

Thank God for Hominick and Stout.

Watching the fights, one fight was moderately competitive....the rest, he - renowned striking coach - would get pounded on the feet and end up having to shoot for sloppy takedowns. 3 minutes was the longest he lasted. Despite all sorts of tough talk and shots of him boxing the camera in sunglasses before each fight.

Haha, that's brutal.

Guess he's an example of a guy who is a much better coach than he is a fighter. Though I don't even think he's particularly good as an all-around coach. Was much better when he was the stand-up coach at Xtreme Couture (that was the situation, right?)

I wonder what Greg Jackson's MMA record would be.

The best wrestling coach in England is probably Zach Light from Wolfslair. 6-10 overall record, including 8 first round stoppage defeats. As they say, those who can, do, and those who can't... teach.

^^^ Well wrestling is one thing. But if there is a guy who is supposed to be the top Striking coach in the world you would think he wouldn't get thrashed so much in a standup fight.

Yea man, how does this guy have any credibility amongst his students? He tapped to strikes one fight and he got KOed via slap in this one:

The other guy was in total wtf mode after Tompkins went down

Being a lousy fighter does not equate to being a bad teacher. Sam Stout and Mark Hominick have trained under him for years here at the gym in London and they turned out alright. And from what I hear from people who have been to his gym, he's a pretty good instructor.

Wasn't he training Jake Shields? If Jake was a walking advertisment for Tompkins then he's going out of business in a HURRY!

Of course. You can intuit martial arts without really reflecting on what you're doing - you'd end up great at the sport but not be cerebral enough to teach the skills to others. And, vice versa, you can reflect on what you're doing and not be able to intuit.

IDK if the YTube videos include him talking tough + shadowboxing (in sunglasses) before his fights - he is a definite assclown. The issue is credibility. Tomkins has no place telling you to suck it up and get back out there. If Tomkins told you to jog the block, you might laugh.
