UFC 132 (July 2, 2011)

Post#1 » by CPT » Thu Mar 17, 2011 9:37 am

I know it's pretty early to start a thread for an event in July, but the July 4th weekend/early July event is typically one of the UFC's biggest, and some fights have already been booked.

UFC.com wrote:Reports of The Prodigy's retirement have been greatly exaggerated: Dana White confirmed today that BJ Penn and Jon Fitch have verbally agreed to rematch at UFC 132.

The welterweights first met in the main event of UFC 127, a number-one contender bout that ended in a draw. "Both fighters look to keep it out of the hands of the judges this time," said White.

The stacked lightweight division will also see two of its fastest-rising stars meet over Fourth of July weekend: White confirmed that Evan Dunham and George Sotiropoulos have verbally agreed to a bout at UFC 132.

Two wrestlers with knockout power collide in Las Vegas as Shane Roller and Melvin Guillard have verbally agreed to fight at UFC 132. "Both of these guys are coming off of Knockout of the Night winning performances," added White.

Penn vs. Fitch 2
Sotiropolous vs. Dunham
Guillard vs. Roller

That's a pretty solid start for a card that doesn't even have a main event yet.

Was thinking of posting this last night when I read about it, thought it was too early to post. Sot/Dunham is an interesting fight.

i don't think BJ/Fitch will headline. We could see Anderson, GSP, Shogun/Jones, etc.

I sorta just assumed that BJ would be headlining but that would be awesome if they could get one of these guys on that card

You can't have BJ headline. He can't anchor the hype or a Countdown. He's had way too many lackluster performances in a row.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

plus the last Fitch/Penn fight was not that exciting so it would be pretty hard to sell as a headliner. the only reason the fight needs to happen again is to try to get a legitimate winner.

Yea I definitely agree he shouldn't be headlining anymore, I just thought the UFC would try to milk his name one more time

I read somewhere that it will be the co-main event, not the main event.

I'm thinking Shogun/Jones vs. Evans could be the fight here. Really the only top fight that fits the timeline. Thinking out loud here...

I don't think the UFC sees BW/FW as strong enough to headline this kind of PPV yet, but if they do, I suppose title fights in those classes are in the mix.

LW - Edgar vs. Maynard III is in late May, so that's off the table.

WW - GSP vs. Shields is in mid-late April, so it would be a pretty fast turnaround, and GSP should be getting ready for Silva at this point anyway...besides, the Penn/Fitch fight is allegedly to establish a #1 contender...unless it becomes for the title, and then the bonafide main event.

MW - Silva's next fight at MW, if he has one, will be against Okami. If that is to happen, I would think it would be on the Brazil card, as it has much more value there than on this card.

LHW - The winner of Shogun/Jones would get a 3 month turnaround, which is certainly manageable. I think Evans still has his shot, and would probably wan to get back in the cage ASAP.

HW - Velasquez is out, Lesnar vs. Dos Santos is the month before, so I don't think a big HW fight will be the main event here.

Maybe a 135 title fight would headline. When is Cruz due back ?

Possibly like this,

Cruz/Faber 2 for 135 belt
Penn/Fitch 2
Guillard/Roller
Sot/Dunham
Wiman/Siver

If Cruz is ready, I suppose it's possible, but I think they want to do a season of TUF with those guys.

Well if its Cruz vs.Faber then I think they can make that the headliner. But I think Faber would be more of the draw than Cruz.

Faber would definitely be the draw, but I still think the UFC is a little bit gunshy about putting BW and FW fights in big spots.

Nobody here would complain, but I'm not sure they want Dominick Cruz to make his UFC debut in the main event spot of a card that is typically one of their biggest money makers.

I think that fight (like Aldo/Hominick) will be a co-main event unless they get a season of TUF behind it for promotion.

Jones to Ortiz. Not quite the turn Bader was anticipating.

Bader was the one who asked for Ortiz IIRC. Either way, see ya Tito, this will be his last fight in the UFC

Tito loses to Hamill, then he gets arguably a more difficult opponent in Lil Nog, and when Tito pulls out he gets arguably an even tougher opponent in Ryan Bader. I think patience is running thin with camp zuffa.
