B.J. Penn and Carlos Condit agree to fight

Post#1 » by Posey H8er » Tue Jul 12, 2011 3:52 am

I love this matchup and I know a lot of people have been screaming for it for a while. I'm also kinda glad Penn/Fitch 2 isn't happening.

Good match up, hate seeing two of my favorite fighters fight, don't know who to pick. No matter who wins, just want to see a good fight.

Don't know who to pick, really?

Condit's only been to 3 decisions in 32 fights and has finished all but 1 of his 27 victories...

BJ is on the brink of retirement, going up against a guy who has had some of the most impressive finishes in recent memory. The fight 4 years ago, and I don't know who to pick.

Now?

Condit by 1st round TKO, goodnight and goodbye to BJ

Though it'll be nice to at least see the best BJ ever for 1 last time

When have you seen BJ get hurt via stand-up?

Also, name one of the guys that Condit "stopped" that was anywhere close to as good as some of the guys Penn has faced.

Get real.

BJ is a warrior for sure, but Condit is steamrolling opponents and I have to think BJ is going to be beat up badly. How much more does he have left? He looked bad against both Edgar and Fitch to me and I'm not positive he'll look better against Carlos.

Condit wins.

Let me rephrase that, don't know who I want to win. You must I have missed where I put that they are two of my favorite fighters. I think Condit will win.

This is one I have been waiting for. It's a tough one to call because I'm not sure how much BJ has left in the tank. For now I'm going to believe Penn still has some fire in him and he'll come out on the better end of the exchanges. Condit doesn't possess the unrelenting featherweight quickness or imposing size and strength that has given Penn problems in recent years.

This is the big tester for BJ - age wise he's not really "out of it", but this fight will show if training/mentally he is.

I can fully well see him rocking up and proving he still has it, or just coming in almost as if its for a pay cheque and leaving the sport.

I REALLY hope we see BJ turn up to play as him on form is probably one of my favourite fighters all time to watch (just regret he never pushed himself his whole career).

I am going to be positive and say BJ wins, 2nd round submission.

Can I ask why people are saying BJ's age is catching up to him? I would say that about someone like Hughes, who BJ blasted right through.

BJ went to a draw with a top 10 p4p fighter, and maybe the number 2 WW in the world. How is he washed up? His last two losses were to the LHW champion and one was less than convicing at all.

The 3rd round of that draw was really, really bad and he looked like a zombie in the two losses. The win was great, but there's not a lot you can take from such a quick KO. I don't think his problem is age, though. He just seemed really disinterested against Edgar and a prime BJ would have trouble doing any better than he did against Fitch.

Maybe it's not so much as underrating BJ as it is overrating Condit then?

I think it's a little bit of both. This is a very close fight, I don't see how anyone could be clearly leaning one way over the other. Penn is always a wildcard depending on which version of himself shows up.. Conversely Condit is hard to gauge as well, since he hasn't faced anyone of Penn's caliber

You guys are on Penn's nuts way too much. The guy has been a shadow of his former self for the last 2 years anyways... Outside of Hughes (Which isn't even an impressive victory) the guy has looked lifeless and completely uninterested. After every single fight, when I see the dejection on his face, I thought he was done. And after fitch, he almost was.

If it was a title fight, maybe, maybe, we'd see a great BJ and a good fight. But he doesn't have the fight left in him to work his way back up into title contention. Condit's a killer, and the biggest threat to GSP. BJ's a talented guy, and a great ambassador, but he's way overmatched in this fight.

Maybe a 1st round stoppage is a bit much, but there's little chance BJ wins this fight imo.

In the last two yrs he has gone 3-3-1 combined LW and WW. Wins over Diego and Florian at 155, Win over Hughes at 170, loss to GSP at 170, 2 losses to Edgar at 155 and a draw with Fitch at 170. Finished Hughes, Florian and Diego, TKO corner stoppage loss to GSP and 2 UD losses to Edgar. That hardly states BJ is done.

Yea, the shadow of BJ Penn is the only person ever to be able to finish Diego. Pretty impressive.

Penn arguably should have won the first Edgar fight as well. He got outclassed in the second fight, but things would be looking a lot different if Penn got the decision (or at least a draw) in the first one.

Condit may very well win this fight, maybe convincingly, but to act like its a mismatch not even worth getting excited over is ridiculous.

Though we could debate the validity of beating guys like Florian and Diego till the cows come home, I'm not going to go in that direction.

I haven't seen the drive and determination from BJ that he needs to have. After that fitch fight, I think he was awfully close to calling it quits. He even talked about calling it quits if he lost to Hughes. The fact that he's been mentioning that so much, and he hasn't exactly gone out and lit the world on fire in recent performances leads me to believe that his heart just isn't in it anymore. He can't beat the champion at 155, and he certainly can't beat the champ at 170. He drew fitch, but we all know he loses if there's another round in that fight, and he isn't going to be able to beat Condit either.

He's going up against a guy who's very hungry for a shot at the title. Who's gone out and finished almost everyone. Condit is going to beat BJ into another dimension. I wouldn't be surprised to see BJ hang em up post fight either.
