He's obviously dodging Nick Diaz.

Holy ****.
Two things: 1) I feel horribly for GSP. Wow. Hope he doesn't lose any explosiveness after these injuries.
2) No exaggeration: The TOP TWO fights I wanted to see a year ago was Condit/Nick and Cerrone/Nate.
I love the ufc for that reason.

Some good news here... Shakes up the division a bit, if they're able to get a title defense in before GSP is back, I imagine the GSP-beaten guys will not get it, so we could see Ellenberger/Condit II or something. Sucks for GSP though, I hope this doesn't affect him.

Damn.. Has there even been precidence for an elite mixed martial artist sucessfully recovering from a blown out ACL and returning to old form? Rothwell and Cote tore their ACLs and neither of them were really the same afterwards (although they weren't elite in the first place).. I think Matt Hughes partially tore his ACL a few years back but I can't remember the extent of his injury.. Hopefully he can fully recover from this
Diaz vs Condit is a great fight but this still sucks

I am really worried he will never be the same after this. I would love if somebody has an example of an elite fighter coming back from this injury. He will also have at least 17 months between fights. That is an insane amount of time.

One of my first thoughts was I wonder if Fitch can somehow get that shot. If he can finish his next fight or something (he won't) and Ellenberger somehow loses to Diego (he won't), maybe we see him as interim and that's how he earns his gsp rematch.

Mir broke his femur in two spots and tore all the ligaments in his knee and he's definitely not as athletic as he used to be, though this can be due to age as well. He had trouble getting medical clearance for a couple years. Struggled a bit after he came back, it's hard to gauge this.

Good call, forgot about Mir who's an obvious example. Like you said, Mir wasn't the same afterwards but there's no way to really guage this right now

We might need to look at other sports, I'm not sure if a torn ACL has ever happened to a GOAT-ish athlete in their prime. Mir was a champion, but the sport was still growing and he was relatively one-dimensional at the time. He's a better fighter now even at 75% speed.

Fitch has to get the winner of Condit/Diaz.
Even though I don't care for him, it's a fresh fight, and if he loses it knocks him away from the title scene, pretty much for good. If he wins, then his first defence would be against GSP, which is going to make a ton of cash regardless of who GSP fights, because pay to see him fight..especially in a come back fight.
Love him or hate him, he has the second best all time record in the UFC at 13 wins 1 lose (gsp) 1 draw (Penn)...and only 1 title shot.

BTW this is such terrible news. Love him or hate him, no one wants to see a guy lose a step via injury.
This is just such disappointing news for fight fans.

I think Fitch(if he gets by Hendricks) should get Diaz/Condit winner, Koscheck should get Ellenberger/Diego winner.

If anyone can come back from an injury like this, it is GSP. He is a workout monster. Still, this sucks.
The good news is it opens up a lot of interesting fights at the top of the WW division. All the guys GSP ran through are now suddenly back in the mix. Somehow Jon Fitch will still get screwed over though. They will probably give the winner to Jake Ellenberger or something.

+1 if this were to happen to Anderson for example, I wouldn't be as confident in his come back as I am with GSP. Age would obviously be a factor too in Anderson's case but if he lost a step he might not be the same since his style relies on his flawless technique and timing. GSP should still be able to take down and impose his will on his opponents.
