I thought Cain was lined up to face Big Foot Silva at UFC 146 ?

Yeah, I've been hearing it will be Velasquez vs. Big Foot at 146, which I guess is now 145.

I don't see why they would put the guy who lost on the first Fox event back in the main event anyway.

^^ We'll see.

Bigfoot is coming off a loss to Cormier and isn't a quarter the draw that Frank is.

Just putting what I heard and read. Not set in stone, but Zuffa would be much better served to have Cain/Mir over Cain/Bigfoot.

Mir has won what? 3-4 fights in a row. Cain coming off a loss. Don't like that fight from the perspective it could eliminate a contender without creating a new one immediately.

That said, I like the matchup. I think Carwin/Nog exposed Mir in terms of, get him against the cage and punch him in the face, and he may crumble. That said, stylistically Mir may be tough for Cain. If he can keep distance on the feet he's probably a better pure striker. Also, he can obviously submit anyone on the planet so taking Mir down may not be the best option for wrestler Cain.

That said, cardio machine version of Cain may destroy gassed out Mir early in the second. lol.

I'm saying they shouldn't have Cain vs. anyone on Fox. Get some new guys out there.

Cain vs. Mir would be a good fight. One of the ones I'd most like to see at HW, just not sure that the time is right.

I think Mir gets a softer fight and then the Overeem/JDS winner.

Cain is a huge draw and the fight is on Cinco de Mayo.

Easy, easy choice.

Looks like you were right about this. Nothing officially announced yet, but most signs are pointing in the direction of Velasquez vs. Mir

Jim Miller vs. Nate Diaz has been officially announced, and that's a great fight. In New Jersey too, so Miller should have nice crowd support.

I feel like Guida vs. Maynard has been rumoured for an event around this time for quite a while. Those 3 fights would be a decent lineup for the Fox portion, if we assume they will continue to go with the 3 fight format.

John Dodson vs. Darren Uyenoyama at flyweight is also supposed to go down on this card. Good fight to start developing contenders for the soon to be created FLW (is there a better acronym for flyweight?) title. 3 of the top 4 flyweights will be eliminated from immediate title contention by losing in the tournament, so it's good to see them making fights that could lead to title contention at that weight class. I don't expect it to be on the main broadcast, but still a good move.

Again, don't really get the possible Mir/Cain fight.

If Cain wins, a contender is gone and no new one is created (barring the always awkward, get KTFO and get a title shot after one win scenario).

I'd rather see Mir vs the winner of the SF GP fight for the title, with Cain fighting someone like Kongo for a shot... though we've seen that fight already.

Diaz vs Miller ROCKS. If Diaz goes through Miller then he really has arrived. He's had numerous close split decisions and an unwise stay at welterweight but lightweight seems to be his real home. Miller is a strong guy with a solid wrestling base while being a superb grappler, same as Diaz. I think Miller has the more advantages but Diaz did surprise me a lot versus Cerrone.

Mir likely gets first dibs on the winner of JDS and Overeem. Considering he has never fought either guy. Then possibly the winner of the SF Grand Prix gets the next shot.

I think Mir has a better chance to beat Cain than he has to beat any other elite HW.

That said, I think Cain probably beats him just because Mir couldn't last long enough to take Cain into deep water on the ground.

Sooo if that fight materializes, I don't think Mir gets a shot.

That's what I figured too, but Cain vs. Mir would throw a big ol monkey wrench into things.

Usually I like when top contenders get matched up (the LW division does a great job of this), but in certain divisions, it just doesn't make sense.

Do Cain vs. Carwin instead. Almost as big a fight and doesn't sacrifice a contender. Last I heard Carwin was supposed to be out for 10 weeks from his November surgery, and was targeting a Spring return. I haven't heard any updates in a while, but going by that timetable, a May 5 fight should be doable.

Cain vs. Carwin is probably the fight to be made, but I don't agree with that. My only gripe is Carwin is coming off of two losses and Cain is coming off of a fight where he lost the belt. It just seems unfair that Cain gets pushed so far back, especially considering the way he lost.

I say Cain vs. Mir, with the winner getting a title shot. Carwin is coming off of a long lay-off, Cain may run right through him. Why not have Carwin fight the winner of Struve/Herman coming up on Fuel in a couple of weeks? It'll be a good fight for Carwin to pick up a win in, or potentially bring a new contender into the "mix".

I agree with that. The one thing I don't like about Zuffa's matchmaking is that when fighters lose a title match, they get pitted up against top five or top ten guys and they ruin the possibility of contender-level fighters being able to build themselves up again. Fitch seems to be the only exception.

Carwin should fight someone like in the 15-20 range, then someone in the 10-15 range, then a top ten guy. Put him in position to string some wins together so people care about him again instead of hoping a vicious finish against equally skilled guys will make people care.

I agree with this line of thinking in general, but both Carwin and the HW division are kind of exceptions. Carwin is 37. I don't particularly care if he makes another title run. If he is going to make one, it's probably not going to start against the guys down in the 15-20 range. Reason being, the HW division is very shallow. Look at the guys ranked 16-20. It's not pretty. Coming off two losses, Carwin fighting one of those guys seems okay. But Cain? Nobody's gonna be real psyched for Cain vs. Mark Hunt.

That being said, I don't see any reason for Velasquez to be put in a #1 contender fight. It's not like he was a dominant champion. He didn't even defend the belt once.

Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller is gonna be the 5 round main event for this card.

That most likely means Velasquez isn't fighting on this card, or if he is, he isn't fighting Mir. Unless of course they just have some god damn sense and are making the better fight 5 rounds.

Dennis Hallman vs. Tony Ferguson and Pat Barry vs. Big Johnson have also been added to this card.

I'll still be going to this card regardless of the main event. Diaz/Miller is a great matchup! Lavar vs. Barry probably won't see any time on the mat unless somebody gets ko'd.

As far as Cain goes, if he does indeed fight on the card then I'll be surprised. I could see them putting him on against a guy lower on the totem pole in the division. How about Mittrione or Gabe Gonzaga? Now that I think about it, you could probably make a case for Mike Russow as well.

Koscheck vs Hendricks added to this card, (if this is the thread for Miller/Diaz)

I am a big fan of both fighters, but I see Johny finding a home for that left hook, on Kos chin.
