UFC 151: Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson (Canceled)

On Thursday afternoon, UFC president Dana White said that the organization was targeting an early September date for the UFC light-heavyweight champion's next title defense, likely on Labor Day weekend.

Surprised it's not a bit earlier, but this is the obvious next fight for Jones.

why not just have Hendo run straight into helicopter blades? he and Matt Lindland will be re-united in a convalescent home by 2015.

Hendo's too tough for his own good and just not quick or versatile enough to deal with Jones.

What do you think? I have learned to never count out Hendo, but man this one is just tough as hell for him (or anyone).

Hendo's a MW too old to make the cut. He walks around at 203. Jones has a frame that will take him to 240 by the end of next year.
And uses that frame profoundly well. If Rashad with all his athleticism and fast-twitch couldn't slip and blast, how will Hendo?
It's going to be a slaughter.

Jones tries a kick, Hendo catches it, pulls him closer, throws a right, drops him. Only way he can win, IMO, and I can't recall more than a couple finishes that started that way. I find it really hard to rule out guys with that kind of power, but I'm expecting a slaughter as well.

To be fair, Rashad landed some decent shots on Jones. Hendo only needs to land the H-Bomb once. I think he could pull off an unexpected KO (see: Fedor), but his window of opportunity might close after the first round.

Hendo's resilience and power will at least allow me to be interested in the fight during the lead up to it, which is more than I can say for any other potential opponents for Jones. The actual fight may not be that competitive, but at least you will have some suspense with the H-bomb on the table. It may only be a puncher's chance, but it's a better puncher's chance than most.
It also has some pretty significant historical implications. Hendo wins and all of a sudden he may be the greatest P4P fighter of all time. Jones winning would give him another huge feather in his cap, cement his status as the best LHW of all time, and move him up the all-time P4P list as well.

I can't imagine Henderson getting close enough to land anything. When a guy can throw elbows at the same distance most people throw punches you have to be quick as hell to put one on him, Rashad was quick enough but even he could barely do anything with it. I doubt Jones gets anywhere within Hendo's range and just picks him apart from the outside.

Anderson probably only has 2 or 3 more fights left, so I hope he starts considering that super-fight soon or it'll never happen. Especially considering that Jones will likely move up to heavyweight by 2014. It would be epic if it was Jones' last fight at LHW and Silva's last fight of his career. Vince McMahon couldn't script it better than that.
Edit: Looks like Andy put that to rest again at the post-fight presser tonight...

Hendo has beaten Big Nog, prime Axe Murderer, and Fedor. Jones is obviously the favorite, but I think that Dan will give him a fight. Dan might have the best chin of all time, and he's going to pursue Jones, wade through the damage, and land at least 1 H-bomb. 1 H-bomb might be all that he needs, and in the clinch, I'm not so sure that Jones has the wrestling advantage. Dan has a chance, but if this goes to the championship rounds he's goint to get destroyed.
EDIT: Shogun was able to take Jones' back twice, Rampage just stood in Jones' range for most of his fight, Machida was able to land some shots, and Rashad was able to land some shots while also holding hands with Jones for half of the fight. Jones is the best LHW of all time, but he's not invicible. Dan is going to take a legkick, jab, and then some elbows from Jones and land a H-bomb. If the H-bomb connects right, Dan wins the fight.

He beat Nog 12 years ago, man. He was 30 not 41. Wanderlei was 5+ years ago. 36 not 41.
He's going to get obliterated by Jones, it will be sad.

I kinda want to see Jones get tagged by Hendo just to see how he recovers from it.
I still want Jones to win, but if one of the rounds were similar to the Hendo/Shogun fight (favouring Hendo), it would be a treat.

No. Definitely no.
I wish I shared the same suspense as you do, but Bones 84+inch reach will make the fight a snooze fest in terms of competitiveness. Still interested in seeing how Bones finishes it. I think he uses his reach to dismantle him on the feet and then (rear naked) chokes him out on the ground.
