Why is Edgar getting an immediate rematch? It's not like it was a controversial decision or anything. He's a great fighter but he looked completely outclassed (literally weight wise) by Henderson, had no chance of taking him down and couldn't hurt him when he hit him. Is this normal for the UFC? Is it payback for him having to give Penn a quick rematch?

I would be less upset about the rematch if we weren't now waiting because EDGAR is hurt. Why wait? We have enough stagnant divisions right now without the best division in mma being held up by rematches again and again.

It's hard to deny Edgar a rematch after he gave rematches to both BJ and Maynard. The first fight was close, and IMHO the upkick to Edgar's face when Bendo was on the ground was the turning point, and I doubt that Bendo would be able to land that again in the rematch.

But I agree with REDD that while Edgar is injured they should give the title shot to Pettis and then Edgar could fight the winner.

I don't even want to make this a Pettis thing, I'd be fine with Diaz getting the shot. Let's just keep things moving, plz.

Edgar gave other guys rematches, he gets this because he's earned the right.

And yeah, no more Pettis for the shot until he beats a wrestler.

I'd be fine with Diaz also, but if the complaint is about the division being stagnant and having to wait for fights, Diaz just fought and would probably need more time to prepare for a fight with Bendo. If he didn't, I'd be fine with him getting the shot.

I'm more interested in seeing him pick off the contenders and getting another shot, but I understand the argument that he deserves a rematch since he's handed so many out himself. I'm worried about Frankie's career, he can't add names to his list if he keeps fighting the same guys and as a result, fewer people will care when he finally does. Including Bendo 2, he's fought 10 times since 2008 against only 5 unique opponents. About 40% of his career fights are rematches or a trilogy.

When exactly is this fight going down? Is it not still on for 150?

Late Feb to early August is not that long of a wait between title fights, so I don't know if it's fair to say Edgar is holding things up, but if they are waiting for him beyond that, that wouldn't be cool.

I still don't think Edgar should get the rematch at all. I understand he gave other guys a rematch, but we don't need to see a rematch every time there's a decision in a title fight where one of the scores isn't 50.

Penn vs. Edgar 1 was legitimately close, to the point that a lot of people thought and still think Penn won the fight. Edgar got his shot coming off a win against Matt Veach, so you can say the title picture was a bit different back then. And it was BJ friggin Penn, when that still meant something. Reasonable to make a rematch.

Edgar vs. Maynard II was a goddamn draw. Plenty of people thought/think Maynard won the fight. He almost finished Edgar early on. I mean, we could have moved forward after the fight, but it would be kinda tough to get hyped for Edgar vs. __________ when Maynard was still around with a pretty legitimate claim to the title. This rematch kind of had to be made to get a legitimate champion.

Does anyone think Edgar won the first fight? I remember there being some chatter at the time, and maybe it will come up again when we get closer to the rematch, but I don't remember it being particularly close.

With so many other contenders out there, there needs to be a better reason than "well, I had to fight Penn and Maynard twice, so he should have to fight me twice" to make a rematch and hold up the title.

I had Edgar winning it. I knew it was a close fight, but I was still quite surprised they gave it to Bendo. The judges are accustomed to giving it to the current champ in those instances, whether that's fair or not. The only major exception in recent memory was ironically when Edgar beat Penn. I'm glad they're having a rematch and I'm picking Frankie to win.

I didn't see it that way at all, I had it 49-46 for Henderson. But after googling I found that some publications did have it for Edgar (and so did Dana White).

Bendo clearly won that fight IMO although Frankie kept it competitive. I felt giving Edgar the rematch was bogus when it was first announced and it's just downright stupid now that they're actually waiting on Frankie to recover from an injury. I second CPT's post, although I wouldn't have even given BJ the rematch after Penn-Edgar I. Rematches should only be reserved for draws and outright robberies. Shogun-Machida was the only recent high profile fight that warranted an immediate rematch for the latter reason.

I had Bendo winning it. I'm against the rematch because we have seen like 5 or 6 rematches for that belt the last 2 yrs or so.

Kinda funny that the exact reason we don't want to see a rematch (so many rematches for the LW title in the past few years) is the reason they are doing it.

Honestly, it may seem like Edgar is just a guy who kind of fights to the level of his opponents.

But, in reality, lw is just that stacked imo. I think this is going to be a title that could potentially switch around a lot in the next couple of years. Guys like Edgar, Maynard, Bendo, Pettis, Cerrone, Diaz, etc. aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
