Nelson/Carwin to coach TUF 16

Post#1 » by K1NG » Thu Jul 12, 2012 6:40 pm

http://www.mmafighting.com/ufc/2012/7/1 ... ghter-news

- The season will start in September, with the finale in December.
- TUF 16 will feature welterweights
- They'll make the move back to the taped format.

"I also asked to coach against Roy Nelson," Carwin stated via release. "The fans know how I like to conduct myself both in and out of the Octagon, and I respect every fighter, coach, official and fan in the UFC. But I cannot respect a man like Roy Nelson - because he shows no respect himself. He is a keyboard warrior who doesn't have the guts to talk trash to my face, but now he's going to have to be in the same room, the same gym and finally the same Octagon as me."

"When I found out I was going to be a TUF coach I was like ‘Wow me!' When I found out I was coaching against Shane Carwin I was so happy to get a chance to compete against this guy," Nelson was quoted as saying in a UFC press release. "As for being in the same room as him, I try not hang out with people that make me feel icky on the inside but, to coach TUF, I will make an exception."

I don't think a welterweight cast was a good idea. There are already plenty of young welterweights with bright futures. Siyar, Rick Story, Rory, Erick Silva... not to mention Hendricks, Kampmann, Condit and Ellenberger are fairly young as well.

Carwin and Nelson have literally been talking smack about each other since Nelson got into the ufc, fwiw.

They started a little twitter war, Carwin always called Nelson fat. Can't remember Nelson's retorts that well but I know he called him out. Didn't they actually get scheduled to fight once and then Carwin had his back surgery?

Carwin talks more smack than you'd think. I used to follow him on twitter and got that impression, anyway. Talked smack about both Brock and Mir, had stopped following by JDS so not sure if he did there.

With how often he's called Nelson essentially fat and worthless, he won't be able to show his face again if Nelson whoops his ass. This is kind of risky though for the ufc, coming off a season where the coach was injured. Really really big dudes with really bad backs don't mix too well.

Expect Roy to go on about stricter testing again. I could see him milking that against Carwin.

That's a good point.

Still, I have a hard time seeing either guy beat any of the new tops guys.

Cain. Nope. Reem. Nope. JDS. Nope.

This is like a spot for a future long-run at gatekeeper.

Glad Big Country is a coach, think he'll be great entertainment wise.

They need to focus on the 145, 135 and 125 divisions for TUF, those divisions need depth.

I'm a big Aaron Ely fan, and both I, plus the commentators for the match, thought he was wronged by the judges against Shaffer. He should be 5-0 pro, 12-0 amateur. I think it's odd he's fighting at flyweight now though considering he's 5'8". I'm not sure if it's an experiment for him that sticks.

Sergio at flyweight I know is an experiment that hasn't stuck. The cut was too hard for him and he didn't perform well in his one match there. Anyways, I think he's too big time of a prospect for TUF. A year in Tachi and then straight to the UFC should be the plan. A more plausible TUF prospect from Roufusport is Chico Camus. He was recently signed by UFC, but I think will be on the shelf for a little while still due to injury, and he seems to have the body type which could reasonably withstand a cut to 126.

Speaking of the Pettis' and Roufusport, this means the rumor wasn't true that Anthony would be named as coach for the next TUF edition. That's good news if it prompts him to fight sooner and expand his options to include Maynard.

Check out the list of fighters Nelson has scheduled to appear as guest coaches on TUF:

Royce Gracie, James Johnson, Jeff Mayweather, George St-Pierre, Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz, Rashad Evans, Forrest Griffin, Chael Sonnen, Jake Shields, Gilbert Melendez, Martin Kampmann, Amir Sadollah, Mike Pyle, Gray Maynard, Ron Frazier, and Anthony Brown

The UFC, however, didn't allow him to bring in King Mo, Kurt Angle and Victor Conte.

I have a morbid curiosity about wanting to see Kurt Angle coaching. Shame.
