Anderson's Manager "GSP is only fight that makes sense."

Post#1 » by Gold Chain » Thu Jul 26, 2012 6:03 pm

"No opponent makes sense for Anderson at this moment. Unless we do a catchweight against Georges St. Pierre," he suggests. "They didn't offer the fight, but he's the only one that could do a super fight. Anderson has the biggest paycheck in the UFC, and you can't promote an event with these amateur kids that are coming up now

Maybe not now, but Anderson seems to be into making this one of his final fights.

GSP has Condit coming up though, then Diaz, so might not work.

Nice to hear this getting some play again.

Then Diaz? Doubtful.

GSP seems to have no interest in fighting Anderson. And Anderson has no interest in fighting Jones. Seems the smaller guys are not a fan of moving up for super fights.

Diaz/GSP is a huge fight that they can do big PPV #'s with, a Primetime, great build-up and the public already knows about Diaz en masse.

Zahabi came out yesterday and said GSP really wants that fight.

100% going to happen, barring injuries and drug tests.

And as far as GSP/Silva. Just going off what Soares is saying.
At least it's something.

Diaz coming off a loss and a suspension is not getting an immediate title shot.

Machida got one off two losses and one crane-kick to "the Natural".

One bad Fox card or a poor PPV buyrate, and they'll do anything.

Just feed Diaz someone like DHK or Riddle to get a quick win with a quick turnaround. Gah, so many divisions are disasters right now.

The winner of Kampmann and Hendricks will be getting the next title shot, not Diaz.

Diaz is suspended and retired. He's crazy enough to only compete in organizations that don't test for THC.

I would love to see GSP vs. Anderson though. It would be promoted as the biggest fight of all time, and it would break numbers for PPV. They could hold the event in a huge stadium like the Cowboy's or a soccer stadium in Brazil. This has the potential to be the greatest fight of all time, and with the amount of money that the UFC, Anderson and GSP would make from it, you've got to think that it's going to happen. I know that GSP has said that he doesn't want to fight other champs, but I think that he said that so that his fights in WW wouldn't lose hype. If Anderson pulled a Nick Diaz and called GSP scarred, GSP would want to fight Silva in a heartbeat.

This is just Andersons' camp not wanting to fight Wiedman imo. Not saying they are scared, just saying they are probably not interested.

Also, if you call out someone a lot smaller than you, you should be willing to cut to their weight. You don't call out someone to move up in weight to fight you, bad form imo.

The time for this fight has come and gone, IMO.

GSP has more than enough challengers at WW to fill his schedule for the foreseeable future.

Silva doesn't, but when you run out of challenges, you don't try to make the guy in the weight class below you move up. If that's going to happen, it's because GSP wants the challenge. If Silva feels he's out of challengers/big fights, he can move up to LHW, but he doesn't seem to want to do that.

To me, this reeks of Silva being scared to fight Jones.
That is the obvious fight. Silva has fought at 205 a few times. Now he wants nothing to do with it.
GSP hasn't fought at 185, and has never tested the waters or said that it was something he wants to do.

If Silva wants a super fight, he might have to go after Jones.

Soares is getting ridiculous, he thinks he's Joe Silva.

He said Franklin is "in the mix" as a contender to fight Anderson.

Silva/Franklin 3 would be the dumbest fight ever scheduled.

I 100% agree. I don't even think he'd make it through the current crop of contenders let alone compete with Silva on more even terms than the first 2 fights.

Its just so presumptuous for Soares to say who is "in the mix" for the top contenders. If he wants to say who is "in the mix" for Anderson's interest in a superfight, that's one thing. Otherwise STFU. Neither you nor Anderson should have any say in who gets to challenge for the UFC Middleweight Championship.

I think the fact that the champion can't request fights or not is maybe lost on Anderson since he's been the MW champion for forever. I don't really get what the extent of a champions clause is, but I feel like if Lorenzo or Dana or whoever say ___ is the next MW champ, Anderson has to take the fight, right? I get why he's try to sell something that isn't, but I mean, can he really NOT fight who the UFC throws at him?

I don't know exactly how these things go down, but I'm guessing Silva('s camp?)'s main concern is that a fight with Weidman won't draw. And it's a valid one, IMO, because it probably won't do very well and would kill a lot of the momentum Silva has coming off the Sonnen fight, which was huge. This is why you hear names like Franklin thrown out there. But what I'm getting at is that it is probably just a negotiation tactic. Silva gets points on the PPV, so his salary takes a big hit when fighting a relative unknown like Chris Weidman. So he says he doesn't want the fight in order to get a higher percentage of the PPV, a higher base, or whatever it takes.

Probably why he wants the GSP fight and doesn't want Jones. GSP is a much bigger draw, but presents less of a challenge than Jones would.

I agree that GSP-Silva is come and gone. Since July 11 2009, GSP has only fought 4 times (Alves, Hardy, Kos and Shields) and won't be back in the catch until late 2012. Who knows how long it'll take for him to get his next fight after Condit.

However, if he's up for it, Dana would gladly push back all the new challengers at WW to make a superfight. But from the standpoint of Dana going out of his way to convince those two to fight, I think it's long gone.

Yeah, GSP, even when healthy, only plans to fight twice a year. By the time WW clears up and guys post-Condit get a shot, Silva will be much closer to retirement. It's at least a year and a half away. And that's assuming he wins.
