UFC on FOX 5: Ben Henderson vs. Nate Diaz (Dec. 8th)

Post#1 » by ...c.a.p... » Wed Aug 15, 2012 6:26 am

http://mmajunkie.com/news/30172/ufc-on-fox-5-gets-henderson-vs-diaz-gustafsson-vs-shogun-penn-vs-macdonald.mma

USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com) confirmed with UFC officials that current lightweight champion Benson Henderson (17-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will face Nate Diaz (16-7, 11-5) at UFC on FOX 5, which takes place Dec. 8 at a host site to be announced.

Also announced are a co-main event of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua against Alexander Gustafsson, plus Rory MacDonald takes on BJ Penn as well.

December will be a huge month for the UFC. This FOX card could have easily been the year end card with this lineup. Plus UFC 155 with the HW title. I wonder what the host site for FOX 5 will be?

Wade is basically Ben Gordon without the 3-point shooting. Sure, he's been a pretty good defender this year, so that would upgrade, but I'd rather have Gordon because he's cheaper and can hit those threes

Would be a pretty **** good card for a PPV. For a free show on Fox? **** fantastic.

Is it greedy that I hope the fight to be named later is Cerrone/Pettis? Would be a great way to open the show, and having the #1 contenders fight on the same card as the title fight on free TV would be a good way to try to get people to pay to see the winners fight later on.

All the Fox cards have been stacked. Yeah, JDS-Cain, Diaz-Condit, Rashad-Davis, and Sonnen-Bisbing were disappointments, but on paper the cards have been stacked. It's strange to have free cards better than $60 cards, but I guess this was the UFC can try to become mainstream through FOX and they figure that hardcore will still buy the PPVs. I've never bought a PPV, but I can understand how frustrated a hardcore fan might be with paying for fights that pale in comparison to free frights.

JDS-Cain was to make a big splash in the first one, but other than that, this is the best one by far.

I'm pretty sure Diaz-Condit was PPV, and Henderson vs. Diaz for the LW title is a much better main event than Rashad vs. Davis (Rashad is a star, but I don't think anyone was super stoked for that fight), Miller vs. Diaz, or Shogun vs. Vera. Hell, Shogun vs. Gustafsson is a way better fight than Shogun vs. Vera, and it isn't even the main event.

I think after the first event the UFC's strategy has been to have top contender fights for free on Fox, and hope to parlay those extra eyeballs into PPV buys down the road when they challenge for the title. Rashad, Sonnen, Diaz, and now Machida all got title shots coming off their fights on Fox. This is the first time since JDS-Cain that a title is on the line.

That's definitely the best UFC on Fox card ever by a considerable margin. They had been far from stacked before with main events like Shogun-Vera, Miller-Diaz, and Shad-Davis. Those are far from PPV caliber. Those are much closer to FX/Fuel headliners. It would really be something if Pettis-Cerrone joined the fray, but ideally that would be scheduled earlier than December.

Yeah, Diaz vs. Condit was PPV, my bad.

I wonder if Nate will flick off the cameras. How would FOX and the UFC deal with that?

Cowboy vs. Pettis is added to the main event.

Is it just me, or is this the greatest card of the year? Runner up goes to 153.

PPV buyers get two green guys with like 12 combined fights (Holloway/Lawrence), cable subscribers get arguably the top four 155ers, a top five-ish WW, Penn's return fight, the prospect at the highest level of competition at 205, and the iconic Shogun.

This is an awesome card, but it's disappointing Cerrone/Pettis won't be 5 rounds. (I'm assuming)

Any word on where this card is going to be held? I might try and get tickets depending on the location.

http://mmajunkie.com/news/30228/despite ... -fox-5.mma

While it seems Donald Cerrone (19-4-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC), Anthony Pettis (15-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and MMA fans everywhere are excited for a potential "Cowboy" vs. "Showtime" fight, UFC officials said preliminary reports about the two fighting on FOX are premature.

"So [expletive] far from being the truth," UFC President Dana White told MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com).

White declined to reveal when the promotion is targeting the much-discussed lightweight matchup but made it clear that an initial report released earlier today tying the two to UFC on FOX 5 is completely untrue.

I don't mean to rain on the parade here, but don't get your hopes up just yet. You know what happens, as of late, whenever they put together great cards on paper...

Shh. lol

This is such a sick card.

Cerrone/Pettis gets next shot at LW.

I think Diaz wins.
