UFC Pick'em Pool
For those new to the board and pool, welcome. For the veterans, welcome back.
How to play:
Every (non-TUF) UFC event, we pick all of the fights on the card, ranking them from 10 (your lock, worth 10 pts) to 1, plus alternates in case there's a draw, NC, or last minute cancellation. Just pick the winners.
The season runs 4 months, from March 1 to June 30.
We may or may not drop the lowest score so nobody is out for the whole season just because they forget to pick an event. As it turns out, while that sounds great in theory, it hasn't been getting more people to play and stay in the game, and it has decided positioning at the top since we started doing it. So I've added a poll.
I'm wondering if something could be done with average scores to keep people in the game without screwing over the guys at the top. Anything with averages would probably create more work for K1NG, which I wouldn't really want to do without him being cool with it.
I've had two ideas so far. Other people probably have better ones.
1) You have the option to drop your lowest score, or even scores, but for each low score you drop, you drop your highest score as well. Not sure how this would actually work, or if people could cheat the system (not that I think anyone actually would).
2) For a missed event, you take your average score, or the event's average score, the lowest of the two, or an average of your average score and the event average score, minus the number of events you've missed.
Hope to see lots of players this season!

Re: UFC Pick'em Pool (Season 5 starts March 2)
I voted for zero. It's the "true" result.
I don't like the average ideas, you could gain on someone ahead of you if you miss the right event or they have a poor one. There shouldn't be any scenario were not turning in picks should help you . It's also more complicated. If you want to assign points for a missed event it should be the lowest event score, and probably minus a token amount from that.
Dropping scores makes sense so people can stay in if the miss one. Dropping both high and low scores may be more fair than just dropping the low score.

Re: UFC Pick'em Pool (Season 5 starts March 2)
I voted for zero as well. There is plenty of notice to get in events. If seeing this thread causes significantly more people to sign up, I'm fine with doing it the way we have been doing it to give those guys a mulligan, but as of now we have our core group of people who pretty much do every event. And as jasen said, if that's the case, then the zero gives the closest to the "true" score.

Re: UFC Pick'em Pool (Season 5 starts March 2)
I pretty much echo what RZ said. If we get new guys that want to have the mulligan rule, then I'm fine with it. If not, the core guys rarely miss events, so the zero would be fair. I like that the mulligan gives us a second chance, but there are a lot of variables that could be a factor. We've seen some extremely low scoring events this season and missing the "right" event could undeservingly benefit someone. I think a zero would be the most objective way to handle it.

Re: UFC Pick'em Pool (Season 5 starts March 2)
Ideally, I think every card should count for fairness, but the mulligan rule was to some extent a necessary evil. Sometimes people forget, get really busy, or have lost computer access for a period of time. Then they're screwed for the rest of the season. They'll either bow out, and have to wait a few months to start playing again, or accept the inevitable fact they aren't a contender.
I think if this rule change is enacted a couple things could make things go more smoothly.
One would be to allow players to submit their picks for any card as early as they like.
Another would be earlier and more eye catching reminders.
A third would be shortening the season a little so people's efforts didn't really go down the drain or if they missed it wouldn't be a waiting period of several months possibly. Maybe the season ends after 12 cards or so. I don't know how long last season lasted.

Don't know about this... with injuries, cancellations and what have you, editing picks could get messy.

Re: UFC Pick'em Pool (Season 5 starts March 2)
Thought I replied to this already.
There's no rule saying people can't submit their picks early, but as SDM pointed out, it's going to get messy with edits and just trying to find the picks.
The earlier reminders part is on me. Sometimes I drag ass on changing the title, when really it should be done as soon as the previous event is finished. I'm not sure how to make it more eyecatching though.
I'd probably prefer 3 month seasons. We've been doing 4 month seasons for the past 2 or 3. If we go to 3 month seasons, maybe we will start with the next one, just to satisfy my need for everything to fit nicely. The Nov-Feb, Mar-June, July-Oct schedule eats away at my soul. Run this one til June, then go July-Sept, Oct-Dec, Jan-Mar, Apr-June the next go around.
Seems like we'll be going with every event counting.

Picks are all over the place for this event. Could be the season right here, given how close it usually is at the end.
