UFC Fight Night 42 (6/7): Bendo vs. Khabilov (FS1)
Posted: Tue Apr 1, 2014 2:19 am
by CPT
Benson Henderson vs. Rustam Khabilov
Ross Pearson vs. Diego Sanchez
John Dodson vs. John Moraga
Yaotzin Meza vs. Sergio Pettis
Lance Benoist vs. Bobby Voelker
Good start to a free card, but with two events the week before (on the same day, no less), one two weeks prior, and one the following week, I wouldn't expect it to get much better.

CPT, I doubt anyone disagrees with what you wrote. The fights today make this card look like UFC 100.
I'm excited to watch Sergio Pettis again.

Really hope Rustam takes it. If only to make it all the more hilarious that Bendo thought he was calling out Khabib Nurmagedov, but also because **** decision-bendo and I love me my sambo cats.

Not a bad free card. I'm looking forward to Pearson/Sanchez, leaning towards Pearson in that one. Also Dodson/Moraga.

Patrick Cummins was so dangerous he could main event and yet the very next card is on the untelevised fight pass part of the card. Lol the ufc is ridiculous.

Yeah, it's about what a Fight Night should look like. Even if you combined last week's two events and made the best 10-12 fight card you could, I think this would be way better. Which sucks, because just killing one of those cards and spreading the fights out over the months could have made all of these cards that much better.

Not the greatest Diego Sanchez fight.
Wow,
Didn't think Sanchez won that fight!
I really think the fix was in on this one unfortunately for Pearson.

lol at the judges decision just now. I definitely can't see how once judge had it 30-27 for Diego.

That decision was a joke.
Pearson won that fight.

He deserves to be taken out to a back alley and be beaten by Pearson.

That was the worst decision I've seen in quite a while. 30-27 Sanchez is an amazingly laughable card, because it means someone scored the round he got dropped for him. This was not a good night for officiating (horrible stand ups, fish hooking...) or judging, but this is the risk you run when you take these cards to place not used to big time fight cards. Win or not, Sanchez is a relic who will continue to get tooled on his feet by anyone who fights, as he mean mugs them and pounds his chest.
Up next for all involved should be...
Henderson vs. Nurmagomedov
Khabilov vs. Pearson
Sanchez vs. Bobby Green
Pearson vs. Khabilov
Dodson vs. Johnson/Bagautinov winner (for the FlW title)
Moraga vs. Josh Sampo
dos Anjos vs. Myles Jury
High vs. Adriano Martins
Hallmann vs. Joe Lauzon
Caraway vs. Yuri Alcantara
Perez vs. Meza
Pettis vs. Mitch Gagnon
Meza vs. Perez
Benoist vs. Kenny Robertson
Jorgensen vs. Chris Cariaso
Martinez vs. Louis Smolka
Tuck vs. Nick Hein
Lindsey vs. Beneil Dariush
Cummins vs. Hans Stringer
Narvaez vs. Sean O'Connell
Cut List: Edwards, Voelker.

That Diego decision was about the worst I can remember. And I love Diego. 30-27, what the ****. It's like a sick joke at this point.
Bendo got a finish, but I'd like to see him fight Diego. It would probably be ruled a NC because at least one judge's head would explode.
I had the impression that the event was decent up until the Diego fight. Now I don't really remember much else, other than thinking John Dodson must be just hell to hang around with (want to see him fight for the title though...maybe he could go up and take BW too, lol). Sergio Pettis' fight was awful. Too bad, I was looking forward to it. He's UFC level, because that doesn't mean anything anymore, but I wonder if he might have been better off getting a few more fights on the regional circuit.

Decisions like this make MMA seem like Pro Wrestling. The worst judging ever. Nothing comes close. Incredibly shameful that one judge had it 30-27 for Sanchez. That judge should never judge MMA again. Feel bad for Pearson. I hope he gets his win bonus. MMA Hometown judging at its worst last night. I agree with Florian- Judges should be ashamed of themselves.
P.S. Diego lucked out against Kampmann, Gomi and now Pearson. He would be on a 6 fight losing streak otherwise. His new nickname is "Diego The Lucky Sanchez".

I didn't care too much who won the main event, or particularly if the fight was entertaining, I just wanted a definitive conclusion for a change in a Bendo fight, and thankfully we eventually got it. I was getting worried after 3 rounds, Crouch was claiming Bendo won the 1st because he was coming forward, and the 3rd was a typical Bendo 50/50. I think another split that Bendo would win was on its way without that punch combo and subsequent tidying.
Speaking of fighters who get every decision humanly possible, it is indeed downright shameful that judges keep buying Diego's act. Apparently all you need to do to win on their cards is to beat your chest after you get hurt, come back from it by swinging wildly at air, and then to throw your hands up quickly after every round. If that's the case, maybe I have a future in the UFC if I want it. That's the implications of decisions like those, that any regular guy pretty much can "beat" among the better participants of this sport. It doesn't make the sport look similar to pro wrestling, rather poker, where Joe Schmo beats Daniel Negreanu on a given day. The atrocious judging aspect is just reminiscent of boxing, only there are 12/10/8 rounds there, instead of 3/5, so it's a lot harder to screw up. Yet they still often do it, infamously.
About Sergio, I was disappointed in his lack of urgency, but let's not get carried away. That fight says nothing about his level at this point, really. He was trying for a get me over, and he got it. The previous fight he was beating a good Alex Caceres and in dynamic fashion until with a minute left he made a series of bad choices to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I think people like to conflate a boring gameplan with ability level because their entertainment expectations weren't met and it's deflating. He's easily "UFC level". He's a good UFC bantamweight. But I never thought he would be Anthony who is an innovator both in terms of moves and how to employ them. Sergio is just a really high-level paint by numbers striker, with a lot of different colors of paint given to him by Roufus and Anthony. He also doesn't have Anthony's clutch ability or killer instinct. He had a chance to clearly secure victory in the last minute against his last 2 opponents yet they turned the tables instead, and he also had the chance to finish Campuzano and Meza but he backed off after he had them hurt. This is stuff you never saw Anthony do, no matter how young. You either have those intangibles or you don't, and I don't think he has them. I think he'll end up just being a really technical, well-rounded guy who wins a lot more fights than he loses, but probably won't reach the mountaintop, and if he does he won't stay there.

His nickname should be Leonard Garcia
As a Demetrious fan im very worried about Dodson. He has such stupid power prolly one of the 5 hardest punchers in the sport p4p he can legit knock the lights off big bantamweights and prolly some featherweights too. Hes a ridiculous athlete too specially for Mma standards. I read somewhere he could dunk a basketball on a regulation rim and had a 44 inch vertical IIRC thats CRAZY!!!!!! but i never quite believed it since the proof wasnt there at the time

I said at the time that that was the worst decision I've ever seen. I have backed off a little but its not too far away. Ironically, on my list of top 8-10 decisions ever would include 3 Diego fights: Gomi/Kampmann/Pearson. Leonard Garcia indeed.
Khabilov was super rocked by that shot because if he wasn't he would have been able to turn into it because Bendo didn't have that side hook in. Good win for him. I say do Benson/Khabib.
