Lets discuss: prime Fedor opposition and current UFC

Post#1 » by Gregoire » Thu May 8, 2014 9:38 am

I think its became stereotype that prime Fedor dominated undersized or weak opposition in comparison to current UFC HW division and in comparison to other super-dominant champs like Bones, Spider, StPierre. What do you think about it, guys? It we try to be objective and without agenda, how his opposition compared to current HW and to opposition of these other champions?
His opposition: Minotauro, CroCop, T.Silvia, Arlovskiy, Coleman, Randleman... He didnt face Couture, Mir, Lesnar and Barnett - four great fighters, if he would beat them in his prime? And I even didnt mention Velasquez, because at the moment od his first champions fight Fedor was past his prime.

He beats Couture, Mir, and Barnett, IMO... until 2009. I think the Brett Rogers fight is when Fedor started to fall off, he didn't look great there, even in victory, and Rogers is nothing but a hard puncher. Brock did the Mir-Couture-Carwin gauntlet at that time (08-10). I think 2009-2010 Brock would beat Fedor, he'd have as good a shot as anyone. Post-diverticulitis, I would put Fedor over Brock.

I agree. Post-diverticulitis Brock loses to Fedor but I think it has less to do with his illness and more to do with his willingness to stand with his opponents. When he first started out Brock Lesnar played to his strengths. He used his surprising explosiveness with his incredible strength to take people down and pound them the F out. As he went along he tried to become more well rounded but he just didn't have the necessary fluidity of his striking and striking defense. I think he would have been surprised by Fedor's handspeed.
