UFC 179 (10/25): Aldo vs. Mendes II

Post#1 » by CPT » Sat Jun 7, 2014 2:01 pm

So, maybe I missed when this was announced, but I don't remember hearing about it. Apparently it was a month ago. Either way, I don't think there's an event thread.

Card so far:

Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes for featherweight title
Jussier Formiga vs. Zach Makovsky
Fabricio Camoes vs. Gray Maynard
Derek Brunson vs. Lorenz Larkin
Walmir Lazaro vs. James Vick

Hard to argue that Mendes doesn't deserve another shot, but I don't see the fight going much differently than the first. Hopefully Formiga vs. Makovsky stays on the main card, but everything else looks prelimtastic to me.

That's a PPV? Aldo's a proven non-draw, and he's not getting much help there. I think Mendes can absolutely do better than he did the first time and possibly win.

Well if you didn't think this was a worthy PPV offering before, you definitely won't now.

Jacare vs. Mousasi helps, but not as much as losing Aldo hurts.

It can't do any worse than UFC 174 I guess.

At least UFC 174 had a title on the line.

There's no way they don't add a fight, right?

Middleweight Gegard Mousasi vs. Ronaldo Souza
Lightweight Gray Maynard vs. Fabrício Camões
Women's Bantamweight Bethe Correia vs. Shayna Baszler
Flyweight Jussier Formiga vs. Zach Makovsky
Lightweight James Vick vs. Walmir Lazaro

The problem for the ufc is that nobody was buying this even BEFORE Aldo got injured lol.

If they do not add another Main Event- i can pretty much say that this card will be one of the lowest PPV buyrates in years. It will be historically bad. Sucks that Aldo gets hurt. Guy has been hurt several times now in his career. Maybe it is overtraining or whatever the reason. Feel bad for Mendes though and he is not happy about it reading his tweets.

How many fights has Aldo pulled out of now?

Not suggesting anything about him, other than being injury prone or having bad luck.

Just seems like a lot.

The UFC is in a real bind here. This card is a mess and they clearly did not learn from their mistake at UFC 151 by putting all the eggs in the basket of the title fight.

I'm not sure what they will do, but I would pull Frankie out of the fight with BJ this weekend and put him in with Mendes for the interim FW title. That would suck for BJ, but at least it would salvage this PPV somewhat. Then do your best to find a big fight for BJ.

The other option may be Mendes vs. McGregor for the interim title.

Aldo officially has pulled out of 4 title fights over the past 3.5 years- UFC 125 back in January 2011. UFC 149 in July 2012, UFC 153 in October 2012, and now UFC 176. The argument can be made for five, since the UFC wanted to book Mendes vs. Aldo in UFC 133 back in August 2011, but Aldo said he was not fully healthy so the fight was made for January 2012 in Rio, where Aldo beat Mendes in impressive fashion and ran into the crowd.

That would be such a slap in the face to Cub Swanson. McGregor? LOL, for what? Plus he's already headlining Ireland, they aren't pulling him off that card.

Guys i just read on twitter that Ronda said she would fight at UFC 176 four weeks after fighting this Saturday. Much respect to Ronda. Wish more fighters were like her.

I mean, I'd give Cub first shot at it, but he is coming off a pretty brutal fight with Stephens. So I doubt he is an option. It sucks for Cub, but the UFC is not going to piss away a PPV for fear he might get mad. He will get his shot.

McGregor is less optimal for that exact reason.

If Rousey runs through Alexis Davis, Rousey vs. Bethe Correia would save this PPV.
