Welp, Dana said today that Conor is obviously the number one contender at 145.

I didn't watch the vid but the ufc facebook shared a link with that headline, here is the exact quote:

“Here’s the thing: If you go down the list, every one of those guys has fought Jose Aldo already,” White told UFC.com in his weekly interview, referencing the top ranked featherweight fighters. “Conor hasn’t. So who do you line up next for the champ other than Conor? Everybody else has fought him.”

Thanks, I hadn't come across that quote from Dana before.

I still think Cub should have the shot over Conor based on merit.

Same, although I'd be lying if I said I won't be watching Conor/Aldo or Conor/Mendes.

Conor has also broken into the p4p best fence grabbing discussion. I was watching the breakdown of him that Robin Black did, multiple grabs in the 1-2 mins of highlights.

I think its arguable that Cub should have gotten the shot instead of Mendes. But at the very least Cub should have been granted the respect to be guaranteed a title shot with a victory over Frankie Edgar. After all he would be on a 7 fight win streak with victories over Frankie Edgar, Dustin Porirer, Denis Siver, Ross Pearson, Jeremy Stephens, George Roop and Charles Olivera. But to make him have to win at least one more fight to get a shot is obscene. Give him the shot if he beats Edgar and make McGregor fight Dennis Bermudez for the next shot.

You guys know I'm more anti-rematch than probably anyone else on this site, but Cub is a COMPLETELY different fighter now than when he first met Aldo, and by the time that fight happened that fight will have been ~6 years in the past.

I didn't really have an issue with Mendes over Cub. I think both guys have been on strong winning streaks and both could've made the case. Mendes did lose more recently to Aldo than Cub but Mendes also has a win over Cub. But as long as Cub is guaranteed a shot if he beats Edgar then I'm happy

So I've been out of the MMA loop for a while and this thread inspired me to look into this McGregor dude. I had assumed he was the next Merican star due to the hype. Can he stop guys taking him down at all? His boxing looks sexy from the video I've seen.

This is why I think he could be the champ and defend it (if he chose to stay at FW). Outside of Mendes, there really isn't any high level wrestlers at FW which means he probably wouldn't need to worry too much about wrestlers in general. That said, I think his footwork, speed, length and his distance fighting will make it hard for wrestlers to catch him.

Aint nobody taking him down if he's near the fence.

I dont think dana white would allow a mcgregor vs dos santos fight if cerrone ends up losing...he learned his lesson from the anderson silva vs weidman fight..he wont make the same mistake again. dos would just take mcgregor down all day.

RDA would push the pace, close the distance then smother the F out of McG. Dana doesn't want none of that.

If Cerrone somehow wins, then they make that McG/Cowboy fight for sure.

Siver prediction is the only wrong one I can think of.
