UFC 177 (8/30): Dillashaw vs. Barao II

Post#1 » by CPT » Tue Aug 26, 2014 6:31 am

There's a PPV this weekend, and unless I missed it, it doesn't have a thread. Not surprising, since it's the worst PPV in a long time...maybe ever. I didn't want to get too hyperbolic, but man, look at this thing.

MAIN CARD
Pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET
T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao for bantamweight title
Danny Castillo vs. Tony Ferguson
Shayna Baszler vs. Bethe Correia
Carlos Diego Ferreira vs. Ramsey Nijem
Damon Jackson vs. Yancy Medeiros

PRELIMINARY CARD
FOX Sports 1, 8 p.m. ET
Derek Brunson vs. Lorenz Larkin
Henry Cejudo vs. Scott Jorgensen
Anthony Hamilton vs. Ruan Potts
Anthony Birchak vs. Joe Soto

PRELIMINARY CARD
UFC Fight Pass, 7:30 p.m. ET
Cain Carrizosa vs. Chris Wade

The main event should be good, because both guys are really good fighters, but nobody needed to see this like 3 months after the first fight. It wasn't controversial at all, and while Barao was a dominant champion, he wasn't on that "immediate rematch, no questions asked" level.

The rest of this card is pure garbage. There are some good fights here and there, and I'm sure some fights will end up being better than expected, but that doesn't mean it's a good PPV.

I hope they lose a serious amount of money on this one. All time low buyrate is in play.

If this card were on fightpass (and if I had fightpass I guess), I would skip all the fights until the main event.

I really think the most interesting thing about this event is whether or not it is the worst PPV of all time.

So I agree that it's arguably the worst PPV of all time, but haven't we been saying that a lot lately. It's got some serious competition, lol.

No this is the worst. The one with DJ/Ali atleast had Rory/Woodley. And the last Dillashaw/Barao one at least had Cormier/Hendo and Lawler/Ellenberger.

Here we have Danny Castillo as the co-main event and a guy I've never heard of on the main card.

Seriously, INVICTA is the only place that should have a Shayna fight third from the top.

It's got some really good prospects like Cejudo, Soto, Jackson, and CDF. But should we really be expected to pay 60 bucks for them? They have to prove their worth before that should occur. It's an effed up card concept accompanied by an effed up main event concept (rematch of a domination), and they'll be lucky if it does Bellator #'s. That Bellator PPV was far more intriguing on paper and will likely be more entertaining in execution, while being cheaper. The people who buy this event are some serious suckers, regardless if it churns out some excitement, and we get a scolding from Dana afterward.

I think Tony Ferguson is for real. Hopefully he can have his way with this wrestling convert and rep for boxing. But, damn, Castillo's camp might have him sizzling. That's a cool fight.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Cool fight, yeah. PPV co-main event? Not so much. Maybe that's getting too caught up with names, fights are fights and all that.

You know, I usually like to apply the "Wikipedia page" test to foreign fighters with gaudy records to see how good they might really be. If they beat a guy without a Wikipedia page, I pretty much treat it as though it never happened. If they lost to a guy without a Wikipedia page, it might count as 5 or 10 losses, depending on how recent it was.

There are two guys on the main card without a Wikipedia page.

Danny Castillo was coming off 3 straight wins when he was scheduled to be on the prelims of UFC 151 (which of course was the card canceled after Henderson got hurt).

We have a title fight at a class most fans don't care about, and it's a recent rematch that I don't think many fans of the division were asking for, at least right away. The co-main is a fight where neither guy is in the 16 of the division, according to the UFC rankings. And it doesn't get better. Has to be the worst ever PPV.

Damon Jackson doesn't have a wiki page, but he is coming off a submission win over The Leonard Garcia.

Castillo/Ferguson wouldn't be a terrible ppv opener.

Not a good one, certainly, but not terrible.

Wow! This is a pretty weak PPV card. Should be an FS1 card.

Cejudo out due to undisclosed medical reasons, speculation is the weight cut was the issue though.

Yeah, it was the weight cut, AGAIN. (that should be the last straw with him getting an opportunity to fight at 125)

More importantly, the same thing just happened to Barao! He went unconsciousness, and he's now out of the event!

Castillo-Ferguson for ppv main event!

I just heard on ESPN, Barao is out of this fight. Feeling ill during weight cut. ESPN reports UFC new comer Joe Soto will fight Dillashaw. I wonder if Dillashaw's title will still be on the line, and if this will still be a PPV??

My initials are ES. I don't know where the PN came from. Prenatal Nurse?

LOL at Soto fighting Dillashaw, now. From perpetually injured and overlooked fighter by the UFC, to a main event slot/title shot, in like a week. That's a change in fortunes like we've never seen.

That was actually the fight I wanted to see most. Sounds like he still doesn't have his act together. He wrestled at 55 kg, don't know why he can't make 125. Of course if there's some reason he can't, then way keep trying to?
