UFC 189 (July 11): Aldo/Conor + Lawler/Rory!

Post#1 » by Bernman » Wed Feb 18, 2015 7:14 pm

This card is off to an early, but rip-roarin' start.

UFC 189:

Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor, UFC FW World Title
Robbie Lawler vs. Rory Macdonald, UFC WW World Title

This is one of the rare cases they'll have a smaller weight fight headlining ahead of a bigger one. But they are pushing Conor as a superstar of course.

I can see one reason they're loading this card up so much. It's being scheduled so far in advance because Aldo and Lawler wanted rests, you gotta figure one of these fights at least is going to change.

Wow
Loving this. Those are two high profile fights. It's nice to have a must see card on the horizon

I argued this in the McGregor vs Siver thread...

Aldo should have been matched up against Edgar in March and then fought McGregor in July

As it stands now, by the time July 11th rolls around, Aldo will have gone 8 months between fights

Since when does a healthy champion only fight once a year?

That was Aldo's doing, not Conor's or UFC's. Aldo said he likes 6 months between fights, and was in kind of war his last time out, so preferred more this time. He pulled a similar thing for his fight against Showtime.

I think fighters should be fighting every 4 months, so long as they're healthy

3 month training camp to prepare for a fight. Then comes the fight. Then 1 month of rest and recovery before they begin training again for their next fight

Since the beginning of 2014, Benson Henderson has fought 5 times, while Cerrone has 6 fights

Aldo has 5 fights in total since 2011

In fairness, nobody should care about their brain as little as Cerrone.

I'm more or less fine with 6 months (this time he's being a little extreme) in between if you are in 5-rounders. 4 months more applies to 3-round fighters. If 5-round fighters like Aldo competed every 4 months they'd accumulate an excess of brain damage, and it'd be bad for their lives, and bad for the sport. They should make adjustments though when they have easier fights. Aldo didn't need to take nearly as long after ko'ing Mendes in the 1st.

Conor seemed a lot bigger than Aldo in their recent staredown, he sure is a big fw. Conor will also enjoy a 4 inch reach advantage.

It would be so hilarious if Aldo wrestled and subbed Conor. Aldo is one of these Brazilian macho dudes so I doubt he will, but I think its easy to forget how great his ground game can be. He has beaten Cobrinha in grappling competition, meanwhile Conor does okay not great against purple belts. :D

I'm pumped for this fight. Although it's hard to top the hype for Jones vs Cormier

I didn't and probably won't watch those videos. But Conor is taking more and more from pro wrestling, starting to get old for me. Listening to mmahour now and Ariel is pointing out specific things he is taking from specific wrestlers.

i'll wait for the edited version the UFC does before they go to the cage. I just wanna see dudes go. If he has something to say afterwards i'll watch but i don't think i'll be missing much before then.

Never liked it. The only talker I ever found a bit entertaining was Bisping.

While his antics and talk is getting old, I like the fact that he's still trying to push Aldo's buttons. It seems Aldo is getting a bit frustrate by it which makes the fight a whole lot more interesting.

What happened to Aldo's face? Looks like he has a scar? If so, i wonder what it's from?

He's always had that. IIRC the story is something kind of lame, like his sister cut him with scissors when they were young.
