UFC 196 (3/5): McGregor vs Nate Diaz, Tate vs Holm

Post#1 » by RalphWiggum » Fri Jan 8, 2016 4:22 am

Being reported to take place March 5th in Vegas on many reputable sites. McGregor still rubs me the wrong way but you gotta love how active he is and the fact that he'll clearly fight anyone.

Conor is a bad mothereffer man, and huge balls.

Even if he wins he's risking missing UFC 200 (early odds are about even). Holm too.

The UFC has balls too. If Meisha and RDA win?

RDA is a destroyer right now. Conor could easily justify whipping another 155ers ass before taking the champ. He wants it all.

A couple years worth of fights are decided by those matchups.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

I really wanted to see Conor fight Frankie and I thought it made the most sense, but I can't be mad at this.

Makes sense... he knows Frankie's a lousy match up for him and not much of a drawing fight anyway, so why not try to get one more massive payday, even if it's pie-in-the-sky, before little Frankie puts him on a two fight losing streak. He scared then, he scared now.

Plan is for him to fight four times this year, supposedly.

This shines some light on what some other guys should do here as well. Frankie should just wait for his title shot. Conor has proven to fight on quick turnarounds, and win or lose he and Frankie could very well headline UFC 200. Aldo should probably be matched up with someone like Holloway. The real question is what do they do with Tony Ferguson? Maybe give him Khabib or the winner of Perris/Alvarez.

No matter how it shakes out, I'm crazy excited for this card.

If Tate wins they do Tate/Rousey III, with Tate having the belt - well be a big fight. Assuming Rousey gets the belt back from her they can still do the Holm rematch after she beats someone else and that'll be a big fight as well.

Conor would just defend the FW belt against small dudes. He'd still be a big draw, though he'd probably lose the chance to be a historic one.

Holy crap...wow.
I never would have thought they would put this together. McGregor is a great fighter, but Dos Anjos looks like he could be a dominant 155 champ with a long reign.
I'm incredibly excited for this one. I was pumped for Aldo, but with the showing CM just had, and the showing Dos Anjos just had, this could be the most excited i've been for a fight in years.

Dos Anjos mentally, will not wilt. He's got that Matt Brown like brain, he's a killer.

So let's look at some consequences from this card:

Holly Holm vs Meisha:
1. Holly wins - Good for UFC - They still have their RR rematch
2. Meisha Wins - Not as good for the ufc, but they can salvage it. Meisha vs RR will still be a big pay day. They can hype it around her come back, and if she 'is mentally focused this time around'. If she wins that, they give HH a tin can to fight and get their rematch with a refocused RR.

Best case scenario: HH wins in dominating fashion and creates more buzz about her dominance. RR comes back focused and beats her.
Worst case scenario: They have a dud, and Meisha wins AND THEN Holly loses her fight in between the RR rematch.

My prediction: HH wins pretty easily after Meisha can't take her down and HH beats her standing.

CM vs DA:
1. Conner wins: Great for the UFC. They do not mind sacrificing DA projection for Conners. It places him into the initial commentary of a GOAT candidate early in his career, and they have their new GSP/Silva/Brock for the era.
2. Dos Anjos: Not as bad for the UFC as you think: CM can go back down to the 145 division and have another shot at keeping his 145 domination going. A loss at 155 won't derail him if he gets another W at 145 his next fight. He can also blame the fact that he's not had a fight at 155, now he has a better feel for it blah blah blah.
Dos Anjos on the other hand will become a household name. They will single handedly create a new superstar over night by the attention this fight will get, and by the sheer talent that he has. He could quickly become another must see fighter, and the UFC needs that.

Best Case scenerio: Conner wins in a complete war, and a close fight.
Worst case scenerio: Dos Anjos wins in 50-45 decision during a complete sleeper and lay and pray. It kills a bit of CM's mystique and DA won't get any shine from it.

My prediction: DA wins. It will be a bit of a sleeper for the first minute or so while they feel each other out. No one wants to get Aldo'd here. Then DA takes control and puts a pretty dominant showing on and wins.

There's not a ref in the business that would let Conor get lay and prayed.

Dos Anjos is a scary dude didn't think Dana would throw Conor in there with him and leave Frankie out in the cold again. I could see it if Cowboy won but Rafael might be stylistic kryptonite for Conor. Intriguing fight but damn bigggggg risk for fighter and company. Conor pulls this off and they might need to rename the company.

The more I think about this fight, the better chances I think Conor has. He is the more technical striker.

It's the takedowns I'm concerned with.
