UFC 197 (4/23): Jones vs. OSP, Mighty Mouse vs. Cejudo

linkDaniel Cormier will defend the UFC light heavyweight belt against Jones in the main event of UFC 197 on April 23 in Las Vegas, it was announced Saturday during UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson. Jones beat Cormier in the UFC 182 main event in January 2015.
In the co-main event, Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight title against Henry Cejudo....
UFC 197 will be held at MGM Grand in Las Vegas after originally being planned for Madison Square Garden in New York. The UFC was not able to get MMA legalized in New York via a lawsuit in time for the event.
Well, motivated Jones has to be a big favorite over getting old DC, and I doubt Cejudo (as well as he's done and having basically unlimited potential) is ready for Mighty Mouse.

Jones seems to have bulked up quite a bit during his prison sentence. It'll be interesting to see how that helps or hinders him. He was already able to handle Cormier before.

This has all the makings of an excellent main card
Jones v Cormier (!)
MM vs Cejudo
Pettis v Barbosa (!!)
Whittaker v Natal (!)
Rodriguez v Fili (!!)
Better main card than 196

Excellent wrestler (Olympic gold medalist) with solid boxing with KO power. As a whole package though, he isn't ready for Mouse. I don't feel he's as fast, as strong, as dynamic or puts together his striking as well as Dodson. Even Horiguchi is more dynamic offensively.
I still think Dodson has the best package for beating MM.

It's hard for me to say that fighter X has no chance against the champion when Ronda Rousey, Cain Valesquez, Anderson Silva, Chris Weidman, Anthony Pettis, Johnny Hendricks, Jose Aldo, Barao, ect. All lost their belts. Most people think that GSP should have lost his. There was 1 card where the underdog won every fight, and that included fights on the undercard. I think betting on underdogs may be good rule of thumb in this sport, if you're a betting man.

I was going to type out why I don't think Cejudo has a chance, but honestly I realized it read similar to how it read when I said Holly didn't have a chance to beat Ronda, so I stopped.
Difference obviously being that DJ is a much more well rounded fighter than Ronda.

So DC petitioned to have Herb Dean removed as ref for their match, because he felt that he allowed Jones to stall him against the cage in the later parts of the fight.
I would have to guess he's got a zero shot of them granting that petition, however his aim was probably to put pressure on Herb for quicker breaks of stall tactics.

Also, if DC loses, any chance he goes back up to HW?
With Cain not being the champ, he should give it a try.

I'm sure its just mind games, but if not then Olympic wrestler DC should learn how to stop guys from pushing him against the cage.

It'll be interesting to see if he's done if he loses. He's 37 and obviously has some stuff he can do after fighting. He has also taken beatings in his last three fights. Finally, if he goes to HW, I'm sure that'd just be extra motivation for Bones to come up and take that belt as well.

Lol that would be pretty hilarious.
I just think for Colemans psyche, if he loses to JJ, he will feel like he was never truly a champion. Second place has always been a theme with him, and you know it eats at him. if he loses, it's hard for him to justify that he was ever truly the best 205er in the world, when it was clear he wasn't. He might want one more shot, and his HW record, and star stature should warrant him an immediate title shot against Werdum, or whoever. He could retire after that if he wanted, but at least he would feel like he was a true champion at some point in his career.
But at 37... He's near the end. At least at HW, it seems like he could extend his career by a few years. They are all older there,

DC's whole fight against Frank Mir was wall and stall.

Lol, more wall and stall in that fight than in Bones' entire career tbh.

From ESPN:
JON JONES CITED FOR DRAG RACING
The Albuquerque Police Department has confirmed Jon Jones was cited for drag racing last Thursday night. He is scheduled to fight Daniel Cormier for the light heavyweight championship at UFC 197 on April 23 in his first UFC fight since being stripped of the title and suspended indefinitely.
Your a **** idiot Jon Jones.

Someone pointed out an interesting trend with Mighty Mouse when he's scheduled to co-main.
UFC on Fox 9: Grant/Pettis canceled, Benavidez/DJ moved up.
UFC 178: Gus/Jones canceled, DC/Jones canceled, Cariaso/DJ moved up.
UFC 186: Barao/TJ canceled, Horiguchi/DJ moved up.
UFC 191: Gus/DC was expected to be the headliner, but it was moved to 192 and Dodson/DJ became main event.
Maybe Jones has simply fallen victim to this curse.

Don't even know if Mighty Mouse wants to main event (because of $).
