UFC 212 (6/3): Jose Aldo vs Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway

Pumped about the last hour of free fights here. I like Spicely and Assuncao/Moraes is awesome. I'm an Assuncao fan and have been for years but would be lying if I said I didn't think Moraes wining would be 10x more interesting for the division.

It's really rare for a big free agent signing to come through tbh, especially in their debuts. From Shields to Lombard to Branch to Alvarez to Brooks to Moraes. The list goes on and on.

I honestly think the likes of Dillashaw run circles around Moraes though.

But Moraes got hard-done by that decision. That was pretty much the fight I expected. Moraes won the only clear round, the third, yet a judge somehow gave Assuncao the 30-27 decision. That's ufc vet bias you see from some judges and refs. The first you could make a case for Assuncao. Moraes was cruising, but then got hit by that solid shot. I don't think that should win you the round. He didn't even show that he was noticeably hurt by it. The second round Moraes stopped moving and feinting, Assuncao capitalized, but Moraes finished the round strong. Don't think it was quite enough on my scorecard. But if you scored both the first two rounds against Moraes that's pretty darn favorable to Assuncao. I had it 29-28 Moraes. 16 of 17 judges on MMA Decisions scored it for Moraes. He deserved the win, against a top contender. I think he's capable of more, but that was not a bad performance, at all.

Even if he won though it was just scraping by. And tbh Assuncao is not as good as his rating at this juncture imo. He barely ever fights anymore, has had serious injuries, got totally outclassed by TJ recently, etc. Granted I admit I didn't watch him vs Sterling so that could have been impressive I guess, idk.

He did win, and just about every fight against Assuncao is some version of that, give or take a little. He's cautious, a big counter threat, and tough as hell to take down or submit. He's a neutralizer to other elite bantamweights. Assuncao won the lion's share of the media cards. So it's no joke for Moraes to have turned the tables and done that to him.

In the end I'm not even arguing that Moraes won't have a good ufc career or anything of that nature, just saying it seems like a lot of big name FAs have rough UFC debuts. I don't really think that's too controversial of a stance, even just given the examples I gave in my initial post.
