2015 - Conor McGregor (3-0: Aldo, Mendes, Siver)
2014 - TJ Dillashaw (3-0: Soto, Barao, Easton)
2013 - Demetrious Johnson (3-0: Dodson, Moraga, Benavidez)
2012 - Benson Henderson (3-0: Edgar, Edgar, Diaz)
2011 - Jon Jones (4-0: Machida, Rampage, Shogun, Bader)
2010 - Cain Velasquez (2-0: Lesnar, Nogueira)
Fun Fact: No one has ever won this award twice. DJ could be the first.

This seems like an exceptionally weak crop.
Only acceptable choices are Whittaker and Holloway, and both only fought twice.
A far cry from running through Machida, Rampage, Shogun and Bader in a calendar year.

A lot of the top guys fought more sparingly this year. And also a general lack of dominate champions right now.

In 5 years, you think people will remember 2017 as the year GSP returned to win a title in a second weight class, or the year Volkan Oezdemir beat St. Preux, Cirkunov, and Manuwa?

Female fighter of the year is a separate award, and should just be kept that way, IMO (though perhaps this one could be called male fighter of the year).

Neither. In 5 years people are going to remember of 2017, remember that time Mayweather vs McGregor actually happened.

It is just a remnant of these awards going back before Female Fighter of the Year was necessary. So that was added but the name here never adjusted accordingly. Maybe I'll switch it next year.
