Plus lets be real, it was never going to be Tony then Gaethje for Khabib. Conor was going to get the title shot after Tony pretty much no matter what. Hell I wouldnt be shocked if we had to wait till August that Dana would crack and somehow find a way to do Conor over Tony.
If Gaethje didnt take this fight he would be looking at sitting till next March-April at best if he was just waiting for a title shot. Also Tony is 36, I wouldnt be shocked if he wants to crank out as many "title" fights as he can while he is still in his prime. He gets the title fight payout boost when he fights for the interim. So the money, plus I doubt Tony enjoys waiting a year + to fight.
But this is all more reason for him to hold for the Khabib fight, he is 36 years old, takes a lot of damage in his fights, is coming off a serious knee injury which despite a win against Pettis, he definitely rushed himself back to return to prove a point. Tony might have a couple fights left at this rate tbh, the Khabib pay day is going to be FAR more than his pay with Gaethje, title and all.
Also, it's pretty crazy how a lot of us are forgetting Tony had some serious mental issues recently ,tearing up the walls in his homes, concerning his wife on a high level, I think at his age, his recent injury history, and the damage he's taken...waiting a year plus is fine for Tony.
But he's not built for it I guess, cutting weight for no reason might be a "tony being tony" sort of thing, but it's awfully stupid. Dehydrating yourself then doing it again shortly after for this upcoming fight, it's nonsense and actually makes me less excited for this JG fight because of what he's putting himself through for no good reason.
JG/Conor and Tony/Khabib is the way to go and the right way to go. Winner gets Khabib, it was a very simple solution.
Also this is wasting Tony's career if anything because instead of getting the dream matchup of his career, now you get Tony taking more damage in a fight you guys only want to see because it's a boring time in the sporting/MMA world. So even if he wins, Tony gets more hurt, and now you have to wait even more longer than initially to get the Khabib fight.
