UFC 90

Post#1 » by cowboyronnie » Sat Sep 20, 2008 11:25 am

UFC 90 is the one of the best UFC cards ever. I can remember complaining every event from 2004-2006 about the org only ever having 2-3 interesting fights per card - Liddell vs someone + some HW garbage. Wow, things have changed.

---
MAIN CARD (TELEVISED)

* Middleweight champ Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote
* Thiago Alves vs. Diego Sanchez
* Thales Leites vs. Goran Reljic
* Fabricio Werdum vs. Junior dos Santos
* Tyson Griffin vs. Sean Sherk

PRELIMINARY CARD (UN-TELEVISED)

* Rich Clementi vs. Gray Maynard
* Spencer Fisher vs. Shannon Gugerty
* Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Horwich
* Marcus Aurelio vs. Hermes Franca
* Josh Burkman vs. Pete Sell
---

main event is totally not competitive - I do not believe in Cote in the least, but if he can hold out for 3-4 minutes of a Silva clinic that will be entertaining as ****.

excited for two animals in Sanchez and Alves going at it. wow. and Diego's been developing his kicks too.

Clementi, Fisher and Maynard are likewise total animals. Not nec contenders (Fisher might be someday - had some rough luck) but tonnes of character and excitement.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Good card. I don't know about one of the best ever, but it's definitely interesting. If the main event wasn't so anticlimatic, I would probably have it up there.

Always fun to see Anderson Silva destroy somebody, even though I like Cote.

Super stoked for Alves vs. Sanchez. Sanchez is one of my favourite fighters, but Alves is a total badass. Should be fun.

Leites vs. Reljic is interesting as well, and may get overlooked, but that's a great fight.

Werdum vs. dos Santos is meh. Fluff fight for Werdum, who isn't exactly the most exciting guy in the least exciting division. Hopefully there will be a quick sub in this one.

Griffin vs. Sherk is an awesome matchup competitively, but I think the fight might suck. People have been sleeping on Sherk, since he got KO'd in his only fight in about a year, but he's still a beast who has only ever lost to Hughes, GSP, and Penn in like 40 fights. I hope Griffin wins though, because if Sherk does, it just **** up the LW Championship situation even more.

The prelims for this show would make for a pretty good Ultimate Fight Night card.

Clementi and Maynard should be good. Too bad Guillard is such a (Please Use More Appropriate Word), because his fight with Spencer Fisher would have been **** fireworks....hopefully Gugerty is a game replacement. Almeida vs. Horwich is decent. I expected big things from Almedia before the Cote fight, and Horwich creeps me out. Aurelio vs. Franca is sick, hope it makes the main card. Burkman vs. Sell is decent as well (is that at 170 or 185?)

Werdum vs JdS shouldn't make a UFN, nevermind the maincard of this event.

Yeah. I can't get too mad about it though, because Werdum really got the shaft with that little 4 man HW tournament.

Before Randy came back he was probably the #2 HW in the UFC, and next in line for a title shot. Now he drops down behind the 4 guys in the tournament, and will have to wait at least 6 months for his shot. He'll also have to win this fight, and maybe one more to stay busy. If he loses at any point, there goes his shot.

I think it's just the UFC's way of keeping him relevant while this HW tournament goes on. If he gets demoted to the prelims, they'll have a hard time explaining why he's getting a title shot in a few months.

Words cant even explain how disappointed I am in Melvin Guillard, the guy is so young, with so much raw talent. But he cant get his life together. I mean this was arguably his biggest fight of his career, one he didnt even deserve, but the UFC threw him a bone. I'm a fan still, but seriously. . he needs to get his **** together.

^ all that talent yet such low in IQ. On and off the ring. He needs to see a shrink or something like GSP did to get his head screwed on straight.

So, yeah, unbelievable card.

Everyone looked jacked at the weigh-ins. Did whatshisface end up making weight? He was 3 over.

Maynard vs Clementi is now on the main card.

What an awesome fight that was.

Sherk looked great. He probably needs another big win or two to make another fight with BJ interesting, but he's probably the 2nd best LW in the UFC and top 3-5 worldwide.

Feel bad for Werdum.

He should have been ahead of Lesnar and Mir for a title shot, but this puts him at the back of the line. Lucky for him, it's a short line in the UFC at HW.

That's a shame.

Weird that Patrick Cote is the only guy in the UFC to make it to the 3rd round. I wonder if they will give him a rematch. Under normal circumstances I would think so, but he was really just thrown in because Okami was hurt and nobody else was ready. It wasn't like he was the real #1 contender.

Alves vs. Koscheck was pretty sweet too. Glad to see Koscheck eat some shots and lose.

Thiago Alves is a monster and I think he has a better chance to beat GSP (or Penn) than any of GSP's recent opponents.

Sherk looked really good, and continues to be one of the most underrated fighters out there. Like Franklin at 185, he can dominate everyone except the champ.

Silva looked more tentitive than I have ever seen him, but he was still going to coast to victory over Cote. Sad how it turned out though.

There is a saying in boxing that styles make fights.... perhaps he had a style that didn't let Sliva to KO him as easy as other fighters he has faced.

Yeah, I know. They have that saying in MMA as well. And for what it's worth, even though Cote lasted longer, I don't think he looked as good as Henderson did in round one of his fight with Silva. Cote did a good job of hanging in there, but nothing he did really made me think he'd have a chance in a rematch, when I still think Henderson with a better gameplan could beat Silva.

The way they were talking about it afterwards, you would think Anderson Silva got off easy. I guess Cote will get a rematch at some point.

Am I the only one that thought Silva was just toying with Cote and that's the only reason it went 3 rounds? At least that's what everyone here thought. It was still fairly entertaining until his knee gave out. And loudmouth said it was a torn ACL, but I seriously doubt that. Probably just a minor sprain. He didn't even appear to be limping after his post fight interview.

The only reason Cote made it to the third round was because SIlva allowed him to make it to the third round. I find it funny that Cote himself mentioned making it to the third round after the fight was over like it was an accomplishment on its own. If it were two competitive rounds with SIlva, then I'd understand him taking pride in it, but Anderson was clearly toying with him for 10 minutes.
