UFC 91

Post#1 » by K1NG » Sun Oct 26, 2008 7:38 am

UFC 91 - November 15, 2008 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

-- Main card --

Heavyweight Championship bout: Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar
Lightweight bout: Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson
Middleweight bout: Demian Maia vs. Nate Quarry
Middleweight bout: Amir Sadollah vs. Nick Catone
Heavyweight bout: Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Josh Hendricks

-- Preliminary card --

Lightweight bout: Jeremy Stephens vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Welterweight bout: Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory
Lightweight bout: Jorge Gurgel vs. Aaron Riley
Welterweight bout: Matthew Riddle vs. Ryan Thomas
Lightweight bout: Mark Bocek vs. Alvin Robinson

This looks like it's going to be a decent card with the potential to be great. I think everyone's excited about the main event. Couture vs Lesnar will be nothing short of explosive. I think it's going to come down to Lesnar's inexperience or Couture's age losing the match for the respective fighter. Should be entertaining regardless.

Florian vs Stevenson is another one to be excited about. I think the winner of this should have a match with Sherk to determine the #1 contender for the title. I'm rooting for Florian in this one.

Expect Maia to remain undefeated when he goes up against Nate Quarry. I'd like to see Maia (if he wins) face Okami to determine Anderson's next opponent.

I'm not expecting much from the last two fights rounding out the main card, but the top three are enough to have me interested.

i will watch a free stream of this, not worth my money. Florian already had a title shot, but he actually wanted to not wait till BJ was done with GSP, so when he TKO's stevenson he should get the next shot ( I don't want to see him fight Sherk bc I think he will lose to Sherk). Okami has a fight in december, and was supposed to have Cote's title shot, so I don't think he and Maia will fight for that. I think they want to use the fact that Okami has a win over Silva (even though he didn't beat him), as marketing for a ppv. I would honestly rather not see Silva take any more fights at MW tbh if he is indeed retiring after his final 5 fights of his contract. I'd rather see him fight at LHW against top guys (top guys as in real contenders, I don't want to see him kill Chuck).

this is clearly one of those cards where the UFC expects the main event to sell the entire ppv. I am glad the ticket sales have shown them to be wrong. I am glad people aren't willing to pay for an inferior product bc it motivates the UFC to put on amazing events like 92 will be.

Couture better win. I've been waiting for a long time to see Nog destroy Couture. Couture ducked Nog when Nog first came into the UFC, now there will be no avoiding him.

I have a feeling Brock is going to beat Randy here. A lot of what Randy does will be nulified by Brock's size. Don't worry though, you will still get to see Randy fight Nog after Mir shocks the world and beats him. Just a hunch.

I think KenFlo will run through Stephenson, but it will likely be exciting. Also, can't wait to see Amir Sadollah fight, I think he has a bright bright future.

In the UFC he's gone to decision 5 times (3-2) and lost by sub his only other fight (0-1). What is the interest? Hasn't finished a fight.

He must be written in to Rich Franklin's contract somewhere. I wouldn't doubt it.

So excited for this one. I'm hoping Randy pulls one out over Brock.

Brock is gonna beat Randy up. .. seriously. I don't see Randy staying off his back. I think Brock will have some nice GnP for this fight also.

so, yeah, did not shape up to be exceptional. The mid- and under-cards are pretty weak.

Maia vs Quarry and Florian vs Stevenson are nice, the headliner is sort of interesting, and I'd like to see Hazelett again. But that's pretty much it. Amir should be on UFNs for a couple more matches, certainly nowhere near a maincard.

Bocek and Riddle are out, IIRC.

Joe Stevenson is paying like 2.35 on the odds, i think i may try my luck with that one.

That is awfully compelling odds considering Stephenson is borderline top 10 at 155.

I stand by my earlier post. I look forward to Florian dominating, maybe getting to see if Amir is the real deal (not sure why they are giving him a pretty good fighter this early in his career), and the freak show main event will be entertaining for however long Randy can avoid being hit. May be 25 mins, may be 40 seconds. Hopefully randy uses leg kicks to break down the roider.

it is funny to me that he stormed off an interview with espn when they asked him if he ever roided, because he gets angry when people ask him that even though he never tested positive. He also forgets to mention that he was arrested for distributing steroids.

Brock's ground game looked like **** even in the herring fight. He was terrified to go for the finish and feared any type of submission. Couture's grappling sucks, but he is experienced, and if he has been training with Wanderlei's Bjj coach, he will be training with easily one of the best teachers in the world. I am assuming since Brock trains in minnesota, he trains with nelson and does submission wrestling, so that does leave him open to a more traditional bjj grappler. the leg locks will always be a problem for him.

NOTES: The Ultimate Fighter Season 7 winner Amir Sadollah has withdrawn from his UFC 91 bout against Nick Catone Saturday because of a leg infection. The UFC was unable to find a replacement and the middleweight bout has been dropped from the card. The undercard contest between welterweights Dustin Hazelett and Tamdan McCrory will be moved to the pay-per-view portion of Saturday’s event in Las Vegas.

The sensationalist in me wants Brock to win, but the idealist in me wants Couture to win. I'm sooo hyped for this fight. It reminds me of those Japanese freakshow matches.. that you know is garbage at face value but you still end up watching it.

It has a bit of that feel, but Lesnar is for real. He is no Bob Sapp. He is a freak athlete for his size and an elite level wrestler. I am torn on who will win, but Lesnar will not be outclassed.
