How Good Was Mayweather Jr?

Post#1 » by Ong_dynasty » Tue Dec 9, 2008 9:34 pm

I was just watching some old fights of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and I have completely forgotten how good he was and really thinks boxing needs him.

Just wanted to ask people with a greater grasp of Boxing History...
If he stays retired now, where do you rank him overall?
If he comes back to fight Pacquiao and wins? Will your perception change? and where would you put him?
If he then answers the call of Margarito or Cotto (whoever wins there fight)..can you put him in the top 5 top 3 of all time?

I know its alot of what if's but just wanted to know what peoples perspective of him is

The guy's handspeed and power was an amazing sight to watch in the ring. Great arsenal with that sweet special check hook to go with speed. A complete package. I would love to see a fight between either Pacquiao or Margarito and him. Even if he were to win, I wouldn't put him in my Top 5. Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Armstrong, Joe Louis, Pep, Duran, Benny Leonard, Sugar Ray Leonard, Dempsey are a couple of guys off the top of my head I'd immediately put ahead.

Would you consider him the best boxer of the 00's?

I can not really say alot since my knowledge of past boxing isnt great to say the least, but isnt it funny that a boxer with an unblemished record, and if he does defeat pacquiao and/or margarito that we cannot put him higher?
He really can not do anything to raise his profile can he?
Do you think he is under appreciated to a degree?!

If he beat Pacquiao, I think that would be pretty big for his legacy.

Pac just destroyed Oscar where Mayweather won a split decision. Mayweather, based on how I remember it, seemed much less aggressive against Oscar. His quickness and movement kept him out of trouble but Oscar was the one pushing the action. I realize it is a difference in style, but the fact that Manny went at Oscar was appealing and he dominated Oscar.
