Caol Uno returns to the UFC at UFC 99 vs. Spencer Fisher

UFC 99 appears to have its first bout, and it marks the return of an early UFC legend to the organization.

A source close to the negotiations today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that former UFC lightweight contender and recent DREAM fighter Caol Uno (27-11-4 MMA, 3-3-1 UFC) will take on UFC veteran Spencer Fisher (22-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC) at the June event.

Verbal agreements are in place, and the fight is expected to be finalized shortly, the source said.

UFC 99 takes place June 13 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany.

Uno, 33, twice fought for UFC titles, but he came up short both times. In fact, his second attempt at winning a UFC belt ultimately forced the closing of an entire division.

Uno, a Shooto veteran who turned pro in 1996, first fought for the UFC 155-pound title (then dubbed the bantamweight title) in 2001, but he suffered a majority-decision loss to Jens Pulver. After going 3-1 in his next four fights, Uno then fought B.J. Penn in the finale of a four-man lightweight tournament that would crown the winner the organization's new lightweight champion (Pulver had been stripped of the belt after a contract dispute). Uno and Penn fought to a disappointing draw at UFC 41, and the UFC disbanded the division for the next three years.

Uno fought once more for the UFC before he headed overseas to compete for K-1 HERO'S, which has since become DREAM. Uno is 10-5-1 since he left the UFC more than five years ago.

As we reported after UFC 94, UFC President Dana White recently expressed his interest in a number of Japanese fighters, including Uno.

"Caol Uno, I love him," White said. "He'll always be a part of the UFC. We're talking to him."

Meanwhile, Fisher has been working his way back into title contention with three victories in his past four fights (all of which took place in the UFC). In June the 32-year-old defeated rising prospect Jeremy Stephens via unanimous decision before topping Shannon Gugerty via third-round triangle choke at UFC 90 in Chicago.

Fisher hasn't fought since that October event and has been recovering from a minor surgery for an undisclosed injury.

Awesome news.

I like this fight a lot too. Should be a good test for both guys.

Would be sweet if Uno's return opens the door for some of the other Japanese LWs to test their mettle in the UFC. At the very least, it should help sort out the LW division worldwide, as a lot of guys haven't fought any common opponents. You can only take so much information from that, since A can beat B, B can beat C, and C can beat A in MMA, but it's still something.

Should be a good fight, but I expect Fisher to overwhelm him in the standup.

I've been bitter for the past few days about Fisher having gone a long time without a fight. His MT is so crisp and explosive - it's unreal. This isn't at all where I wanted to see him, though. Against some poor little baby-faced Japanese dude? Ugh. This is Sakuraba vs Manhoef at 155. :( I won't even be able to watch.

Why don't they put Fisher in against strikers? That's what I've been fantasizing about. Against Florian or Clementi (retardedly, he just got cut ). That would be unreal. I'd love to see him against Razor Rob or Cerone too.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Clementi might be back. The UFC will cut guys if they expect a long layoff so that they can schedule fights, get a few wins and paydays and then the UFC could bring them back. I could see him coming back. I'm excited that Fisher is fighting again. They had the Spike Marathon and I finally got to see the flying knee against Wiman and it was beautiful. I was instantly a fan and I also got a chance to see the Franca fight too. I remember hearing his name a lot but I got into MMA just after his stock seemed to drop I guess. It should be fun to watch Fisher-Uno because I like both guys and I guess it's a contrast in styles. I thought Uno was older than that. mahalo

Rich Franklin will be fighting Wanderlei at a catchweight of 195 lbs.

Cowboy, Caol is good. I doubt Spencer will destroy him. Caol went five rounds with BJ. Granted, that was like seven years ago, but still.

Yeah, but Spencer is no BJ Penn. We are talking about the same guy that got overwhelmed by natural 145 Frankie Edgar and lost to Hermes Franca recently as well. Spencer is not exactly rolling through guys like GSP. I have seen nothing out of Fisher that makes me think he is going to run over a fighter of Uno's caliber. Fisher hasn't beaten anyone of note since a very young Thiago Alves in 2005. Fisher is an exciting fighter, but not the great one you seem to be implying.
