Roy Jones Jr. wants to fight in MMA?

Post#1 » by CPT » Sun May 10, 2009 1:53 am

Has anyone heard much about this story?

Apparently Roy Jones Jr. is willing to fight Anderson Silva in the UFC under UFC rules. Failing that, he'd accept a fight with Nick Diaz in Strikeforce.

Do you think he genuinely wants to test himself in MMA, just wants a few big fights, or is it all just tak?

Here's an article on the situation:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news;_ylt=A ... &type=lgns

It seems inevitable that some day, somebody is going to promote a match pitting an elite-level boxer against an elite-level mixed martial artist.

For the past year, former pound-for-pound boxing kingpin Roy Jones Jr. and current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva have talked about being the first to do a fight that would be a subject of much curiosity.

Silva has talked of wanting to test himself by boxing Jones, which UFC president Dana White nixed immediately. Silva still has four fights left on his UFC contract and it makes no business sense to risk one of your prime stars in a dangerous sport.

Jones, at 40, a Hall of Famer who is clearly past his prime as a boxer, has no big money matches lined up. So he has offered himself up to fight Silva in a cage under MMA rules, which, if nothing else, greatly changes the odds on who would win such a fight in favor of Silva.

White nixed that idea as well. He said he could probably promote it into being a big fight, but he felt it could hurt MMA in the long run and blew it off as something that would be done in Japan. Freak-show fights did huge business in Japan over the short-term. One can’t point to such fights as the direct reason MMA and kickboxing interest in Japan has faded, but it doesn’t appear it was a long-term positive.

After UFC turned Jones down, Nick Diaz’s camp talked to Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker, saying if Jones was willing to do MMA, they were interested in such a fight.

Coker said Wednesday it hadn’t gotten past one phone call from Diaz’s manager earlier that morning. At the same press call, Showtime vice president Ken Hershman seemingly nipped the idea in the bud.

“I get a Roy Jones call once a week pitching me things,” said Hershman. “[The fight] would be a very long shot of ever happening.”

When asked if that was due to financial reasons or sport reasons, Hershman indicated the latter.

“It has nothing to do with money,” he said. “I think it’s an insult to the integrity of mixed martial arts to think Roy Jones, or any professional boxer, could just come in and fight Nick Diaz in a mixed martial arts context. In a boxing context, it’s completely different.”

But such a fight would not be dismissed by one of the country’s most influential sanctioning bodies. Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, indicated he would not oppose an MMA rules match with Jones, at 0-0 in the sport, against even Anderson Silva (24-4), the best middleweight in the sport.

“You’ve got to give Roy Jones a lot of credit,” said Kizer. “At the end of the day, the most dangerous part of the sport [of MMA] is striking, not leglocks or chokes. It’s very different from Butterbean and Mark Hunt [a proposed 2006 boxer vs. MMA fight Kizer refused to sanction under MMA rules]. He [Butterbean] wasn’t a top athlete and the MMA fights he had were with rules limiting the ground time.”

Kizer felt in the interest of fairness, a Jones vs. Silva fight would be best under more neutral kickboxing rules, but also indicated he would sanction it under boxing rules as well, feeling Silva has proven himself to be a top-level striker, and Jones is a proven elite-level athlete.

I bet Anderson would stand with Jones under MMA rules. And it would likely be a great fight.

Yeah, I get the feeling that that is one of the main reasons Dana White won't make the fight. They might even go so far as to have a gentleman's agreement that it would be a boxing (or at the very least, kickboxing) match in the Octagon. Going in and trying to stand with RJJ would be very dangerous for Silva. The UFC can't have the best fighter in the world go out and lose an "MMA" match to a washed up boxer. It could set the sport back 10 years.

Then there's obviously the financial side of it, as Junior isn't going to be fighting for $300,000. He'd probably want millions and to co-promote the event with his own company.

I bet Anderson Silva is going to be super pissed about this getting shot down though. Even though nothing will really come of it, it's an interesting story to follow.

I guess this is just evidence that styles make fights, as I think Jones would have a legit shot to beat both Silva and Diaz, just because they will likely want to stand to try to prove something, while a guy like Demian Maia (or even.....Thales Leites!) would beat him inside of a minute.

I've been seeing these articles for the past few days, one however pointed out that most of these articles have been run away stories that are far from the truth in the original article by CBSsports, haven't bothered looking myself. But what I've been wondering through all this is whats up with the Jones-Lacy fight that there was allegedly a vocal agreement to. I'm a boxing fan, I also like MMA, I don't mind seeing them on the same card, but I'm less interested in Jones trying his hand at MMA, I think his time, money, and effort would be better utilized in one last comeback attempt and possibly next year, facing Silva in a boxing match if the two really want to do it. I'm a huge Jones fan, and I think other RJJ fans would agree that they'd rather see him box than go into MMA, especially against anyone other than Silva.

Would the MMA version of Jones-Silva be just 3 rounds of boxing? Possibly, but even then, does that help Jones or if you're like that, boxing any. I don't think so, sure it sets MMA back a lot, as evidenced by White's refusal to do the match, but w/e, I'm interested in Jones-Lacy not in seeing Jones' Jiu-jitsu.

Yeah, Dana is making the right choice here. Silva has been flaking out lately, and as you guys said, he would likely just stand with Jones.

I think many of us would agree that RJJ would beat, if not embarrass Silva in a boxing match, but in an actual MMA fight, Silva would end it quickly.

I guess the best thing to happen is for Silva to lose against Griffin, which drops his stock a little and would make him focus on MMA again.

Jones just wants attention... He never got the love that other fighters have gotten.

Anderson for some strange reason wants to box...

Roy has no MMA experience yet he already wants in with UFC? That would be pretty good for the UFC, it would help them get more popular.

Imagine seeing a prime Mike Tyson in the UFC. Or even LeBron James or Dwight Howard.

I kinda feel like they should let him try now.

Mercer beating Sylvia leaves a real bad taste in my mouth (and I am not a Tim Sylvia fan by any means). I'd really like to see that get evened out by having RJJ come in and get dismantled by Silva, or even Diaz or someone in Strikeforce.

Oh, and please tell me you aren't serious with LeBron James and Dwight Howard. 155ers would have those guys slapping the mat in about 30 seconds. Guys with that kind of athleticism who actually train MMA? Now we're talking.

That's what I meant.

Imagine this line-up playing training for competitive volleyball.

Dwight Howard
Chris Bosh
LeBron James
Anthony Randolph
Travis Outlaw
Chris Anderson
Chris Paul
Dwyane Wade
Kobe Bryant

That's a lot of size, length, and athleticism. If they can learn the basics of volleyball then they would own any team out there.

I'd be more interested in the Jones/Diaz fight than Jones/Silva.

Jones just needs to hit a guy once to end the fight... just remember that... even if he is a washed up boxer.

Whoever he wants to face better take him to the ground because it is beyond stupid to trade with a guy who has one punch knockout power with 10 ounce gloves and has even to this day quicker handspeed than any MMA striker.

I remember reading on yahoo that Dwight actually uses the heavy bags as a part of his workout and has playfully worked out with Chris Byrd( ex Heavyweight champ) and has said he punches harder than Wald.
