If MMA was in the olympics, which country would have the most golds? Which country is the best overall?

It'd be interesting since there are great fighters from pretty much every country.

I'm going to guess, but I bet Brazil would get Gold or Silver medal.

Brazil - Gold
USA - Silver
Mexico - Bronze

How would the Olympics work? Gold/silver/bronze in each weight class? If that's the case then I think there would be a three-way tie for most golds. Assuming Torres fights as an American. I guess a Japanese fighter that I don't know about could take one of the lighter classes. These guys are the current champions so it's kind of easy to say, but I truly feel they are the best.

Heavyweight: Fedor
Light Heavyweight: Machida
Middleweight: A. Silva
Welterweight: GSP
Lightweight: Penn
Featherweight: Brown (maybe Faber takes it and gives America the lead)
Bantamweight: Torres

Then I'd have to think Americans would clean up with silver/bronze. But who knows how some of these guys would do with multiple fights in a short period of time.

There'd be headgear, most importantly.

It would never work, because the rules would have to be so watered down, and there would be too many fights over a short period of time.

But just for fun...(these will kind of look like top 3 rankings, but are based more on who I think would win the fights, not who has accomplished the most like most rankings)

They almost surely would. That is how it goes in every other sport. Guys like Tito, Buentello, Diego...would all be fighting on the Mexican team and they would surely have the 3rd best looking roster.

I don't know enough about boxing, but how does boxing work in the olympics?

Don't they have gold/silver/bronze in multiple weight classes?

Maybe something like, 8 fighters make it into the Olympics, 3 rounds, 1 fight per week for each fighter.

And I'm sure there are some unknown fighters in foreign countries that would most likely give bronze and possibly silver medals a good run...which is why I feel it would be an amazing event, simply because there are great figthers from every country. And how would a fighter handle possibly 3 fights w/ three fighters that have completely different styles within three weeks?

Fair enough, but even if they did, if the best of the best are competing, none of those guys are getting a medal. Sanchez would be the closest.

Japan on the other hand has a lot of more talented guys in the lower weight classes, though they wouldn't be guaranteed (or as close as you can get to a guarantee in MMA) a medal in any division like Mexico would be with Torres at BW.

If it were only open to amateurs, that would open things up quite a bit, but IMO you would still see the top 3 being USA, Brazil, Japan.

Rumor has it that Submission Grappling is being considered for the next Olympics, basically Abu Dhabi with teams. If thats the case I say Gold-Brazil/USA toss up, Bronze-Japan. Other dark horse countries: Iran,China,Russia.

I wonder if UFC fighters would take part in the submission wrestling event. ..

I think so, no matter what level you are as a athlete being able to represent your country on that big of a stage would have to be as big as headlining a PPV. Look at the NBA players for example.

There are clauses in their UFC contract preventing this, the UFC would have to grant permission. That would be a huge step, I think. They would be conceding something of a monopoly, it would be weird.

The UFC would not allow their fighters to compete.

It would cause a big stink, but they aren't going to shut down their show so their fighters can go make money for someone else.

You are correct my friend is on the UFC roster, (undercards) and he is not making enough $$$ he wants to take a few small show fights that he knows he can dominate to get a little extra cheese, but he is worried about Dana finding out so I guess he isnt. The UFC is as close to a monopoly as there is in combat sports, especially since that video game came out, how you going to have the rights to someone's name, ala Vince Mcmahon, thats shystie if you ask me.

The question is would the olympics allow UFC and other pro fighters to take part, alot of Olympic events don't allow professionals to compete, Basketball is one major exception, while Boxing is a major example.
