Top 5 active fighters

Post#1 » by El Hardee » Fri Jul 24, 2009 1:34 am

I know we probably had a thread like this before, but I am curious who the cats around here support. You can kinda see someones personality by the fighters they follow. This is not all time list just active fighters. My list :

1 BJ Penn, He's kinda been acting immature lately but he da man.
2 Nick Diaz, Talks alot but backs it up.
3 Demian Maia, his BJJ is so effortless, he is always in control and 3 moves ahead.
4 Miguel Torres, the most exciting and well rounded fighter in the game.
5 Fedor, pwrful hands, great subs, and stone cold in the ring, a real professional.

1/2. Georges St-Pierre, one of the goats.
1/2. Lyoto Machida, i just love watching his fights. Even in his more "boring" showings his style just fascinates me.
3. Jon Jones, great, great prospect and extremely exciting.
4. Sexyama, JUDO THROW!
5. Jon Fitch, I dunno why really, just always been a fan.

5 seems a bit low though. If it was 10 deep there still wouldn't be that huge of a difference from 1 to 10 for me.

Liddell stays in until he officially retires and Hughes is definitely active. If Chuck is out, then throw in Mark Coleman. UFC 10 was the first one I saw, and Coleman just steamrolled everyone. Been a fan ever since. Chuck and Hughes were the top dogs when I got really into the UFC and I always root for them.

Lesnar is a guy I championed way back when people were putting him with Kimbo in the sideshow group. I thought he would one day be the guy to beat Fedor and I still think so. I also love watching him fight. There are not many guys you watch and you feel like you are maybe going to see something extraordinary, but with Brock, I get that feeling. He puts on a show and I like the whole personality he brings. The UFC has needed a guy like him since Tito went to crap.

How can everyone not have Forrest on their list? He is the most likeable guy in MMA and always has great fights.

If this were a poll I'd say its a tie between Torres/Fedor for now.

Not really a GSP fan(not doubting his talents, he is legit in top 3 lb for lb), Also like Josh Koscheck at 170

He has a ton of fights on Youtube if you wanna check some out.

It would actually be much easier to come up with my top 5 active fighters if I was going by who is the best.

I have to think a little harder to choose my favourites. These are guys I would root for in pretty much any fight they are in.

Rampage
Diego Sanchez
Akiyama
Brock Lesnar
and probably Penn....I've stopped liking him as much since grease gate, but I can't think of anyone else right now

There are tons of guys who I enjoy watching, and respect their skills, but really I don't feel connected in any way whether they win or lose.

They would include
GSP (especially tough for me, as a Canadian, I feel like there's pressure to like him, and I do, but I often find myself rooting against him in fights....he's so classy and squeaky clean that it's kind of boring to see him win all the time, especially when its by domination with no finish)
Fedor (clearly the best, I just feel no connection)
Anderson Silva (might have made the original list before the Cote and Leites fights....I feel like he's changed his approach to fighting and I don't care for it)
Machida (I like his defensive style better than Silva's weak imitation....it's more natural)
Maia (his BJJ is just awesome)
Aoki (ditto, but he's kind of a douchebag....I like to laugh at his 'jump around' kind of intensity)
Torres (awesomeness in a small package + the war mullet)
Nick Diaz (has been really fun to watch lately, but I'd like to see him step up in competition, not just in weight....sometimes I'm torn on whether I like his personality or not....same goes for Nate, but he's just kind of a scaled down version)

One problem I have is a lot of the guys I like to watch are in the LHW division - so inevitably down the road I am going to have to pick sides.

Right now I really am a big fan of Jon Jones, Machida and Forrest.

Theres an absolute ton of guys I love watching, but I'll generally get behind guys that like to mix it up with a bit of everything, rather than just standing there and boxing/brawling, a mix of going to the ground and stand up, or at least the threat of it.
