Penn vs. Sanchez to headline UFC 105
By Jeremy Botter August 21, 2009 Post a comment | Email the author
A source within the UFC has confirmed to Inside Fights that BJ Penn will likely defend his lightweight title against Diego Sanchez in the main event of UFC 105.

Penn has claimed that he would never fight in the United Kingdom again after earning what he thought was an unacceptable purse for his fight against Joe Stevenson. The internal belief is that the free television show will likely pull in millions of viewers, and that kind of viewer base can help turn Penn and Sanchez into even bigger stars, which will translate into bigger pay per view buyrates for both fighters down the road

Damn...that's a gift.

Smart move though, That will be the first PPV after the Kimbo TUF, correct?
The next few months are going to create a lot of new fans

I really like that card!

Wow another title defense for BJ so soon. When is this card, November-ish ? I was thinking he might fight again around Dec/Jan.

I'm surpried the UFC gave Penn a title defense on free TV. But then again UFC 104 has Machida fighting, 106 has Lesnar, and 107 has Jackson vs Evans and Kongo vs Mir. UFC 108 is on January second which is too long of a break imo.

This could get huge ratings for Spike. I agree with the article's points.

Sounds like a fight night quality card.

Should be some good fights though, and definitely an interesting main event.

A gift as well in the sense that I'd love to see Diego Sanchez get his face busted.

At the very least it should be fun to watch.

Go Diego.

I hope its true, but it could be free in UK. I remember one of the current UFC's being free in like UK or something like that.

Really makes no difference to me whether it is on PPV or Spike, but it's pretty cool if they give a fight this big to the UK fans live, and the NA fans free on Spike.

I'm a big Diego fan, and I think he has a better chance at beating BJ than Florian ever did. That being said, that chance is probably still pretty small if Penn is on top of his game.

I love the Bisping vs. Kang fight. I've been wanting to see this for a while. I think they match up very well, and it should make an interesting fight. I just hope they both get after it and not try to win a jab and run decision. Also, if the Penn/Sanchez rumour isn't true, this would be an awful main event....but still a good fight.

Dong-Hyun Kim vs. Dan Hardy is another one im interested in. Both guys are 3-0 in the UFC (Kim has the extra NC vs. Karo), but Hardy has looked more impressive against tougher competition IMO. I think the winner of this fight is a top 10 WW, and Hardy might already be there. That said, I think Kim can take this fight, and I hope he does.

Wilks vs. Brown should be fun.

Pearson vs. Riley does nothing for me, nor do the other fights.

I would expect to see Nick Osipczak on this card, and maybe some of the other UK usuals (Taylor, Kelly, Etim, Davis).

UFC95 was free on Spike if memory serves, for the Sanchez Vs. Stevenson card.

I think 105 was announced as free before they mentioned the title fight, but obviously with the UK cards being "earlier" in the day for you in America, I can understand why they do put them on free every so often.

IDK. We miss a lot of the in between rounds on free T.V. I'd rather PPV. But it's a quibble.

Agree that the top 3 fights are awesome. Hardy has made himself one Hell of an exciting fighter, and Kim's had some badass performances.

But after that, things are a little slim, with an itneresting fighter here and there but not much intrigue. Now that they're going to paying-out for Penn and Diego (between the two salaries, that's well into the mid-6 figure range), I doubt if they'll improve the undercard too much beyond some other TUF names.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

"A middleweight contender eliminator between Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt is in the running to headline UFC 105, Fighters Only has been told."

If true this is a good way to decide the title fight. Plus is makes the Live TV (tape delay) card even better.

But why wouldn't Penn still be the headliner considering it's a title fight?

If that fight ^ gets added it would make this card pretty awesome. Pretty quick turn around for Marquardt to start preparing for Hendo, but I guess since Maia fight only last 21 secs he at least doesn't have to recover from any injuries.

Penn doesn't want to fight in the UK.

I have to say I was shocked when they said that would be the fight and was waiting for the penny to drop on that one.

There is less cash over here for MMA. While the event's fill out and certainly are good venues (The O2, Manchester MEN), its not quite the level of Vegas.

Still, I'd like to get a big main event and a solid card that doesn't resemble a TUF Finale lol, I've said for a while I think its a long time before we see a title fight in Europe, unless it involves a European defending it (I don't think the UFC, for example, would put say Brock defending his belt in Europe) or maybe a couple of other circumstances.

oh ****, that's an awesome fight. I think Nate wins it.

and it would be great to slip Marquardt right back in there, considering he didn't get touched in his fight.
