I think there's a better chance I wrestle in NXT in the next couple years than Styles does.

I wonder if you would have said the same about Joe this time last year.

When Joe got released I'll admit I didn't think he'd be in NXT essentially full-time. But I don't think the situations are particularly comparable. Joe's return to ROH amounted to a cup of coffee and he did some one-off Indies. AJ's essentially the top heel in NJPW and has been a featured player for ROH for almost 2 years now. Joe probably could've had a very similar schedule to AJ and for various reasons opted for NXT. But regardless of what he did, he was wading into the unknown. Whereas AJ has one situation with minimal uncertainty and that situation is in all likelihood the more lucrative one. And AJ has flat out said in an interview when asked about going to NXT that he'll go to whomever pays more.

Finally catching up on this week's episode. Asuka is the dopest. JJ and Gable playing around with the "world's greatest tag team" stuff is perfect. People have been talking about them being the new Benjamin and Haas, so they may as well acknowledge it and run with it while putting their own twist on things. Bull Dempsey vs. Angelo Dawkins is a perfect example of how much better NXT is than RAW. A match like that would normally get the FF button on the remote but they find ways to make even "meaningless" matches like that entertaining.

I saw the spoilers and knew the Joe turn was happening but it came off better than I thought it would. Joe showed the right mix of ambivalence, desperation and just a tinge of regret. It might be a little too nuanced but I'm not sure this was a full-fledged heel turn. He's clearly going to be positioned as the heel in the feud with Balor, but this might be like the Neville-Zayn feud where one guy is clearly the face and the other the heel in the feud but that guy isn't a full-fledged heel otherwise. I'm also curious to see what the explanation is. Joe hasn't been around NXT long enough that he can say he got tired of waiting for his title shot, he has been in wrestling long enough to say he's tired of waiting.

I rarely outright criticize NXT booking decisions but I think they really missed out on Enzo and Cass. I don't think they're as over as they were a few months ago, they should've struck when the iron was hot and had them be the team to win the title in Brooklyn. I think The Vaudevillains are going to be transitional champs and if that was the case they should've had Enzo and Cass as the transitional champs.

I think Joe is absolutely going to be a full-fledged heel. When he had Finn up on the top turnbuckle he grabbed his face and said "I did this to you!" super intense like. That was some major heel work there. I think he'll play up the ruthless heel side pretty strongly. I also think Joe works best as a heel anyway. He's one of the few guys who I actually don't roll my eyes at when they do the super intense promos.

I've always loved heel Joe because of that intensity and his bad@$$ persona in general. He definitely looks the part and can pull off some pretty ruthless stuff as a heel.

I think most guys will have to undergo an almost 180 degree shift when they turn, its a large part of why a lot of turns don't work. They're firmly entrenched on one side or the other and they don't shift them enough from where they were. I think Joe's one of those guys that his heel and face character are very similar and he doesn't have to change much because of that.

You're probably right about this being a full-fledged heel turn. But he didn't touch Apollo Crews, when he came out to chase off Baron Corbin I think he was genuine about wanting to kick Corbin's ass and his sole intent when coming out there wasn't just to beat up Balor. And he seemed to have a little hesitation before he attacked Balor and a little hesitation throughout and a touch of regret afterwards. He's clearly supposed to be the heel in this feud, I'm just not sure he's a heel otherwise. I don't think you'll be seeing him team or being chummy with Corbin or Rhyno and other standard heel fare.

I certainly hope not. Its not something he needs in order to be the dominant heel in NXT. I'm down for loner heel Joe that's looking to take out Balor solo but doesn't NOT take advantage of landing the cheapshot or blindsiding his target, picking up scraps from a Corbin Rhyno beatdown and the such without necessarily enlisting their help.

Not every heel has to be chummy with other heels. Look at Kevin Owens. Yeah, he'll team up with other heels, but generally only when it benefits him, and if it doesn't he'll be as likely to fight as just walk away at the first sign that things aren't going well.

Yes, self-preservation is his top priority but he is absolutely chummy with other heels. He's teamed with pretty much every heel of note and he may not always be the best partner, but he's still doing it very regularly. That to me is a step too far for Joe. The lone wolf is better than your standard heel. But I'd rather see it as, not a tweener per se, but rather someone that is a heel in that he's willing to do what it takes to get the title. But otherwise, he's more likely to team with Crews than Corbin.

Yeah, but most of the time when Owens was paired with other heels it wasn't really his choice. It was just a scheduled match against a team of similarly random faces. That's just something that the WWE is prone to do during Raw and Smackdown, presumably to get more of their roster in the ring. The only time I can really remember Owens willfully teaming up with another heel was two weeks ago on Raw, and that was so that Rollins would owe him a favor later.

But I think that's a distinction without a difference. I don't think it really matters who made the match or why it was made. If next week on NXT they announce the main event is Balor and Crews vs Joe and Corbin, I'll still take issue with it even though presumably it wasn't his choice.

NXT highlights:

Alexa's butt.
The Hype Bros getting chants.
Alexa's butt.
Seriously, that Bliss booty.

I like the idea of Nia Jax, but I'm not digging the presentation at the moment. The name stinks and the ring gear looks clunky and unflattering. I don't like the smiling gimmick either. I'm pretty sure that everything will click for her eventually, but only after some adjustments to the presentation.

The tag team of mini Arn Anderson 1 and mini Arn Anderson 2 is fascinating. They're definitely solid. If they were to have a long title run on the main roster, I think they'd need a manager of some kind.
