Daniel Bryan retires

Post#1 » by Rhettmatic » Tue Feb 9, 2016 12:04 am

I know this is being discussed in the WWE TV thread, but what a bummer.

There's a good list on Reddit of his best matches here:

Im sure I'll hear my answer on the show later tonight (west coast pre recorded on my cable) but, is this a retirement from WWE or a retirement all in ring activity? I remember Bryan saying he would go back to the indies if WWE didn't clear him.

i really hope beyond hope that is a work or he is going back to ROH or New Japan but if he retires there isn't going to be anything i enjoy about the WWE, sucks the life right of WM for me (last hope would be Ambrose vs HHH for the title at mania, but thats it, if that doesn't happen i'm probably done with the product for at least a little while)

I've read he asked for his release but WWE refused. They don't want him to get hurt even further even if it's outside the company.

Daniel is and always has been one of favorite wrestlers ever, fantastic in ring performer.

I loved every moment of his interaction with Kane over the years. They did some classic stuff together.

I'll also never forget all the fans taking over Raw and invading the ring and around it. That is one heck of a Raw moment!

This is probably in my top 5 moments since I started watching again. The company loves to bring up the occupy raw a lot, but I loved this moment so much more.

Another time HHH announcement got hijacked by Daniel Bryan without even doing a thing.

Two things
1) Amazingly WWE management STILL did not get the message and start pushing DB as a top star
2) In his retirement(hopefully not farewell) speech DB referenced this as one of his favorite moments as his father was there and it was the last time his father saw him in the ring live

The way he gets the crowd to change their cadence is one of the greatest feats in wrestling history. He had everyone on a **** string that night.

As much as people would go **** when the glass would break or Austin would hit a stunner on McMahon, as much as Flair had the crowd or Hogan way back, I'm not sure a wrestler has been able to connect with the fans in such a way as DB has and he had to work his ass off to get the crowd on his side but once they did he owned them.

Just watched part of Bryan's interview on ESPN, and he admitted to having at least 10 documented concussions and having a few post-concussion seizures that he hid. That **** made me feel like a complete **** for wishing that his retirement was a work.

This is such a powerful photo. I'm not sure if this was taken before or after the speech, but my heart sank when I first saw it. A visual representation of a person experiencing their dream coming to an end.

My favorite Bryan moment was also the break away from the Wyatt family, and it might be my favorite moment as a wrestling fan in general. I know Rock coined the term, but he really was the people's champ even without the strap. So much so in fact, that him winning at Mania almost bittersweet in a way, because we all felt like we were part of the chase, and now the chase was over.

That clip where the crowd is chanting for him during the Cena/Orton stare down is fascinating too. He and Punk were so much more over than anyone else in the ring yet McMahon pushed the status quo yet again. I can't imagine how much money was lost by Vince holding those two back. It would basically be the equivalent of him bringing back Hogan and Savage and pushing them over Austin and Rock during the attitude era. Really pisses me off that we don't get to see either anymore.

Looking at that picture, I couldn't help but think back to his speech when he thanked folks who helped him along the way. The person he mentioned as the guy who trained him and mentored him wasn't Shawn Michaels; it was William Regal - even though it's been Michaels who has been credited for training him in his early years. And at some point, it'd be great to see William Regal in the WWE HOF. He's gone through some rough times in his life due to mistakes he made, but him making it would be momentous. Anyway, back to Brian Danielson.

As Safi said in the TV thread, DB was/is probably the last guy I was able to fully emotionally invest in. Looking back, the lead up from Summerslam '13 up until WM 30 was a helluva roller-coster ride. I'm extremely sad to see him go but I am happy that he's taken the Doctors advice and is walking away while he still can. Credit to the WWE for given him a proper send off.

I think we all know why that's the case.
