It’s just impossible—especially with WWE—to know when those high points are coming. Half the time, they’re not even by design. I guess that’s part of what makes the medium special; it is especially hospitable to accidents and unplanned fortunes. When they happen—Summer of Punk; The Yes Movement, etc.—you think, man, they really got lucky this time. But it happens so often, it can’t just be a matter of luck.

I look at it kinda differently. We're all wrestling fans and as fun as it can be at times to mock the, far too often, stupidity of the product we'd trade that for a second for a good product. And so when something works that was probably unexpected, probably unplanned we want to believe it wasn't just dumb luck or a happy accident but that it was the plan all along.

The two examples you mentioned, ignoring that neither story had a satisfying conclusion Bryan's really never had a conclusion and Punk's became convoluted and stupid. But even just looking at the peak and how we got there, Punk basically just sat down and said probably essentially the same thing he'd been saying for years (minus the profanity) backstage and driving down the road with Kofi. And its tempting to believe it was the plan all along but giving a guy 5 minutes to just speak his mind generally isn't a pathway to the main event. Bryan got over in the summer of 2013 in basically throwaway matches with The Shield that's primary purpose was to eat up 2-3 segments on a 3 hour show. And then they did Summerslam and after a few PPV's they went in a different direction with him and did the stuff at the Rumble. Then eventually they circled back to him after Punk left and Batista didn't get over. And its tempting to believe that Bryan holding the titles to end WM was the plan all along, and even if we ignore that Batista, Punk and Bryan have said it wasn't, it would mean that they knew that Bryan would continue to stay over despite 5 months of bad booking and that Batista would be completely rejected.

He refused to answer the question, and then spent 5 minutes talking about wrestling. God bless him.

I'm not sure why but I'm always still surprised to see people who don't actually know how huge WWE is, especially someone in sports media. Like you really have to have your head buried in the sand to honestly not know how huge of an event Wrestlemania is at this point.

Would have been a great Buzzfeed article.

I've never seen this before today. Might be the worst thing I've ever seen in pro wrestling. This is just as bad, if not worse than, the Dungeon of Doom vignettes.

Yep. When Sting started talking about it I was wondering if it was a crazy road story about White Castle. I googled it and found that video. I nearly didn't make it all the way through.
