General NBA: is the league broken?

Post#1 » by DusterBuster » Thu Mar 2, 2023 6:10 pm

Is anyone else sensing that something is really wrong with the league this year? The amount of mediocre teams hovering around .500 and players regularly out with injuries feels like abnormally high. Am I just getting old and forgetting what other seasons are like or am I right here?

I don't think the .500 records are too odd. We're just so used to them being in the east rather than the west.

We also have to keep in mind that apparently the play-in is a big hit and with the chance extending from 8 to 10 to have the opportunity for the playoffs it makes teams that would normally start giving up around January continue to go for it.

In principle if every team had a .500 record the league would be perfectly balanced. I don't think it's a bad thing, if teams have similar records it just means that the league overall is fairly even.

I love the parity and lack of tanking. I hate the rules that inflate scoring. Mostly though I would like to see the league adopt FIBA rules and interpretations of palming, travels and moving screens. I still have a vary strong suspicion from time to time that the NBA is more akin to "professional wrestling" than a fair and impartial sport.

 Many years ago I made the professional wrestling comparison on here, pointing out that like the Vulcans and their business veiw of things, over a pure love of sport, could potentially ruin the sport as a whole. It's why I can't stand watching soccer. Biggest problem I see now is Vegas and it's influence on the NBA. No surprise for me to see the officiating become what it has with betting sites as major NBA sponsors. Funny thing... I feel about as confident betting on professional wrestling as I do with an NBA game these days.
