Trading down - lots of option- what would you do?

Post#1 » by Village Idiot » Mon Jun 12, 2023 9:46 am

Let's say that Cronin has the following deals lined up to execute on draft night. All involve trading down. Different teams would only do these if one of Scoot or Miller is available at 3.

1. Scoot @3 to Houston for 4, 20 and Eason
2. Miller @3 to Detroit. 3, Simons, Little and Nurkic for 5, Duren, Bagley and Bojan
3. Scoot @3 to Orlando. 3 and Nurkic to Orlando for WCJ, 6 and 11
4. Miller @3 to Indiana. 3 and Nurkic to Indiana for Turner, 7 and 26. Can't be completed until July due to Turner's balloon payment this contract year.
5. Scoot @3 to Washington. 3, Simons and Little to Washington for 8 and Porzingis (extend and trade)
6. Scoot @3 to Utah. 3 and Simons for 9 and Markannen
7. Scoot @3 to Utah. 3 to Utah for Kessler and 9
8. Scoot @3 to OKC. 3, Nurkic, Little and Watford for 12, Chet and Dort
9. Scoot @3 to Toronto. 3, Simons and Nurkic for 13 and Siakam
10. Miller @3 to Atlanta. 3 Little and Nurkic for 15, Collins and Onkongwu (into a TPE)

Markannen would be a perfect fit for this team. If our previous GM had not been incompetent we would have had him a couple of years ago!

1. Scoot @3 to Houston for 4, 20 and Eason YES. Love this one. Would prefer a future pick instead of 20
2. Miller @3 to Detroit. 3, Simons, Little and Nurkic for 5, Duren, Bagley and Bojan No. This one is too big. No need to include Simons/Nurk in it. 3 + Little <-> 5 + Duren (TPE) + Burks would be better
3. Scoot @3 to Orlando. 3 and Nurkic to Orlando for WCJ, 6 and 11 Yes. This is decent, but I don't like getting this low in the lotto.
4. Miller @3 to Indiana. 3 and Nurkic to Indiana for Turner, 7 and 26. Can't be completed until July due to Turner's balloon payment this contract year. No. The 'IDEA' of Turner is much better than the actual player. Not worth the drop in lotto position.
5. Scoot @3 to Washington. 3, Simons and Little to Washington for 8 and Porzingis (extend and trade) Maybe. Not terrible, but this keeps me wanting more.
6. Scoot @3 to Utah. 3 and Simons for 9 and Markannen No. I like Porzingis better than Markannen. I'd prefer the Washington Trade over this.
7. Scoot @3 to Utah. 3 to Utah for Kessler and 9 Maybe. I LOVE Kessler. Thought he was the best player on Auburn - but for some reason everyone overlooked him. If we could get the #16 pick in addition - this would be a yes.
8. Scoot @3 to OKC. 3, Nurkic, Little and Watford for 12, Chet and Dort Yes, but this one is is too big. 3 for 12+Chet would be an obvious deal that feels more appropriate.
9. Scoot @3 to Toronto. 3, Simons and Nurkic for 13 and Siakam Yes -> Swap Nurk out for Little though.... I don't think Raptors do this. Not because it's not fair, but because they don't have a direction
10. Miller @3 to Atlanta. 3 Little and Nurkic for 15, Collins and Onkongwu (into a TPE) Maybe. I really like the idea of Collins, but this is a bit too rich for me.

Having gone through all these, my favorites are Houston (3 -> Eason + 4 + future 1st), Detroit (3 + Little -> 5 + Duren + Burks), OKC (3 -> 12 + Chet), and Utah (3 -> Kessler + 9 + 16)

Interesting I keep reading all those trade posts that argue over Scoot/Miller being there at 3.

If Miller is there at 3, Portland simply takes him without trading down, for like Charlotte he's the
best positional fit for both teams.

I would only trade down 2-3 spots to ensure one of Amen or Jarace Walker are there when Portland
would pick. I still would consider trading down to 9 if Kessler were coming back in trade.

I'd still love to trade 3,23, 43 to Orlando for Wagner, 6 but that's likely a no from the Magic. They
might do 3,23 for Wagner, 11 but 11 might not be high enough to draft Derek Lively, who will
be over drafted due to the scarcity of bigs

I think the mostly likely trade is with the Rockets, especially if they don't get Harden. I'd love to
add a solid player like Eason, while Portland could still get one of Amen or Walker at 4.

Trading down does avoid the issue of fitting Scoot in Portland. Where ever he goes, he's got to be
the PG and he might be the worst fit than Simons next to Dame for he can't play off the ball
and Dame at this point of his career is not going to be happy playing off the ball.

If Scoot is there, I like the idea of trading down to 4 (or anywhere really) and picking up a good asset, and then drafting Black. Of course, besides Wemby, I think Black is the best player in this draft.

9 and Mark or 13 and siakam.

The Orlando one is a good value deal but we don’t need more worse young talent - we need more high end.

NBA is still a star driven league. The chances at drafting someone who could develop into a star is far
higher with a top 3 pick. The only way I'd trade the pick is for a player like Bridges who is already an
all star level player

Yep. Don't overthink this people. Make this pick or only trade it for a true current All Star player. Those are the options. Trading down will almost always end with the team moving down getting a lesser player than they could have had.

There likely are old timers in the team's scouting department who old enough to remember 2005 when
Portland traded down to draft Martell Webster, when CP3 and Deron Williams were available to them.
