Blazers match Mav’s offer for Thybulle

Post#1 » by DC_Melo » Fri Jul 7, 2023 2:40 am

With the Blazers matching Dallas’s offer sheet, we will retain Matisse Thybulle for the next 3 years at roughly $11 million a year.

Contract includes a Player Option for the final year and 50% of his annual salary must be paid in full prior to Oct 1 each year… which actually makes him very trade-able if he stinks up his contract and opts in his final year.

Pros:
-Can defend. Had a higher DPM his rookie season than most of our current roster will have in their entire careers. Actually, his DPM might be higher than our entire roster combined… need to run the numbers on a few more guys, but definitely all our key rotation guys combined. Although that’s more a reflection on how bad our team defense is…

-Shot a career high 3pt just under 39% after being traded to the Blazers.

-His nickname is Mathief

Cons:

-Net negative offensive player his entire career

-His shooting numbers vary A LOT year to year, which does not give confidence he has reliable shooting mechanics and makes his hot shooting with the Blazers feel a bit fluky

-A bit undersized to be a true switch-all defender

-Shooting percentages aside, a lot of his other stats are pretty stagnated… not sure he has a much higher ceiling.

If he ever develops a consistent jumper, he could be a great 3 and D guy for us. But there is a lot of reason to doubt that will ever happen.

Did we do the right thing in matching him or should we have let him go to the Mavs?

If Jeramai Grant is worth $32M/season, Thybulle is worth $11M/season. Sunk cost fallacy.

Well this is obvious we weren't going to trade Josh Hart then let the biggest reason that trade happened walk out the door. Especially in a world where we will probably have quite a bit of cap space in the near future.

Is it also to preserve the asset, the salary slot?

That seems to be more the case with Grant’s deal or did they give out that deal not expecting Lillard to ask for a trade AFTER that deal was signed?

I’m definitely good with this. Portland will need some vets for the young guns to learn from. I’d still rather it be Josh Hart, but having Matisse around will be good.

From what I have heard Blazers FO wants to win rather quickly. Even with a Dame trade they are looking to make a playoff push either this year or next. So thus the Grant offer and why they didn't scoff at giving him that deal.

IMO Thybulle $11M for 3 years is better than Grant's $32M for 5 years

Loved Josh Hart, but the rumors were that he wasn't going to re-sign in Portland. The other rumor was that the Blazers could afford either Hart or Grant, and chose Grant. Again, just rumors. But Thybulle and Murray is a solid return for an expiring Hart.

Fair enough if Hart wasn’t going to re-sign. I’d have chosen him over Grant in any case.

You'd rather have given Hart 5 years $160? Or are you imagining a fantasy where we made a good, smart contract offer to Hart?

Overpay, but not an egregious one. Probably worth matching.

While I don’t think we would ever offer Hart 5/160… it does terrify me to think of what we would’ve paid him   :banghead:
