Donovan Clingan is @ #4

Drafted: No. 7, UConn
Key stats: 6.3 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.6 blocks per game

Clingan leads all rookies in blocks per game and has shown plenty of positive flashes, moving into the Trail Blazers' starting lineup Feb. 12 and adjusting to extended minutes for the first time in his career. He had plenty of success in a platoon situation at UConn, but the next step will be consistently shouldering more playing time in the NBA.

He is already an impactful defensive center and has been consistent on that end, stepping in amid injuries to Deandre Ayton and Robert Williams III and proving effective in drop coverage and on the glass. Improving his frame and conditioning might help limit foul trouble and make finishing in the paint easier moving forward.

Clingan looks like a legitimate defensive centerpiece for Portland, particularly if he can stay on the floor for longer stretches.

Clingan, TWO TIME NCAA NATIONAL CHAMP!!!
Flagg & Knueppel, zero national champs.

BTW, is Clingan trying to learn how to shoot Kareem's skyhook?

NBA Sophomore of the Year Nominees
Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs
Amen Thompson, Houston Rockets
Toumani Camara, Portland Trail Blazers

Winner: Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs

In Camara’s case, he doesn’t have the same reputation as one of the Portland Trail Blazers’ best playmakers, but he’s been a star in his role as a play finisher offensively while taking on one of opposing teams’ two best scorers on a nightly basis...Both of Thompson and Camara support their clubs in ways that make everyone’s life easier, and they’re major reasons for the turnarounds each franchise has seen from last year to present. Each of them, with Ausar Thompson as a potential fourth option, are all worthy vote-getters in the Sophomore of the Year category.

I do think both Amen and Toumani have had more memorable one-on-one matchups this year holding star players to poor shooting outings, but that’s to take nothing away from how good Ausar has been as a team defender and playmaker. As his offense keeps coming along in the halfcourt, Ausar has a tremendously high ceiling of his own as a two-way hybrid forward.

NBA All-Sophomore Second Team
Chet Holmgren, Oklahoma City Thunder
Bilal Coulibaly, Washington Wizards
Cason Wallace, Oklahoma City Thunder
Keyonte George, Utah Jazz
Scoot Henderson, Portland Trail Blazers

Last, but certainly not least, it was so nice to see Scoot Henderson find more of his NBA footing after a rookie campaign that a lot of observers wanted to forget on his behalf.

Henderson didn’t live up to expectations last year as the third-overall pick. He was inefficient, turned the ball over in the pick-and-roll, and had his fair share of uphill battles defensively at the point of attack. Not to mention that his struggles shooting the ball from the outside were already noted before the draft.

This year, Henderson improved in essentially every area across the board. A portion of his Synergy rankings still aren’t the kindest to the young point guard, but watching the tape, Henderson’s flashes have been much more outspoken this season.

Scoot put together the best stretch of his career in January and February. He shot the cover off the ball and distributed it all over the floor as a lead guard while limiting mistakes. All season long, Henderson’s been more engaged on defense, improving his steals marks year-to-year.

Most importantly, it’s been fun to watch Scoot be Scoot again. His dynamic flair, downhill aggressiveness, and midrange craft all make him one of the best young guard prospects in the NBA. The talent is there for him to become an All-Star, and it’s been a joy to see more of it progress during his sophomore season.

Agreed. Would be cool to see him in a position where he could actually build on that progress every game.

I wonder why he has been held out for a concussion for so long? It seems rather odd IMO?

Probably just closing down the season. No real need for him to come back this year.

concussions are nothing to mess around with:

" Recovery from a severe concussion can take a variable amount of time, ranging from weeks to potentially months or even longer. The severity of the concussion, age, and individual health play a role in the recovery timeline. While some individuals recover within a few weeks, others may experience persistent symptoms for a longer duration, potentially leading to post-concussion syndrome. "

my brother got a significant concussion on a fishing boat and was out of action for nearly 3 months. He was 28 at the time. He experienced severe headaches and blurry vision for weeks. His doctor told him to avoid getting his head below his heart; to squat instead of bend over. That would be tough to do playing basketball

now I suspect that Scoot's isn't as bad and it's a slight case of mini-tank with a final opportunity to evaluate Banton. But it easily could be his concussion was a significant event

Well Banton has been failing his final evaluation these last 2 games in particular

1-12, 0-5 with 7 TO
4-16, 0-7 vs UTA

Both his FG% & 3pt% (39/32) are cratering to his career (40/30) averages….what a surprise

NBA average is .467/.36

His efg%\TS% rank in the 17th percentile

His usage rate is in the 85th percentile

So yeah a below average, high usage chucker, not what this team or any team that wants to be good needs

Hopefully the analytics nerds that POR mgmt seems to rely on can recognize what is smacking them in the face when it comes to this guy, but then again I have zero faith in this organization

The Trail Blazers are not renewing the contracts of three of head coach Chauncey Billups' assistants, a league source confirmed. Chris Fleming, Roy Rogers and Ryan Gomes will not be back next season. The Oregonian first reported the news.

The changes come as part of an effort to fortify Billups' staff after he signed a long-term extension on the last day of the regular season.

This is the second consecutive offseason the Blazers have made major changes on the bench. Last spring, they didn't renew the contracts of Billups' lead assistant, Scott Brooks, and his brother, Rodney Billups, and assistant Steve Hetzel left for a job on Jordi Fernandez's staff with the Brooklyn Nets. They filled those spots with Fleming, Nate Bjorkgren and Ronnie Burrell.

As of now, Bjorkgren and Burrell are still in place, along with assistant coaches Jonah Herscu and Mark Tyndale and player development coaches Pooh Jeter and Gil Abraham.

Another shakeup on the coaching staff

Wonder if POR brings Paris star guard with Splitter as a back up vet to Scoot

With his contract expiring this season, the 27-year-old guard is expected to leave Paris at the end of the season, and there’s strong interest from the Memphis Grizzlies for him, as Basket Europe has reported.

Also hired MEM former lead assistant, Patrick St Andrews

Before his tenure as Taylor Jenkins’ lead assistant with the Grizzlies, St. Andrews had stints with Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks. He was fired from Memphis as part of their termination of Jenkins late in the 2024-25 season. He’s also spent time with the Dominican Republic National team.
