Cronin and Billups arguably want what Billups had as a Piston in 2004 -- a defense-first identity.
Deni and Toumani are key.
Getting Shaedon to take 2 fast, immediate steps back on defense is key.

If Toumani gets his Blazers $$$ as a RFA, that's fine. He's the Blazers' Tayshaun Prince.

It would be more than fine. Tou extending as a RFA would limit him to 22M and that would be a huge steal.

He wont do that.

Well, if he signs a new deal washing away Y3 @ $2.4, in essence he is making $27mil/year - $22mil + the extra $20mil he would miss out on next year spread over those 4 years (also hitting FA in 29/30 if that last year is a PO at age 29 instead of age 30/31)

It also protects him if he gets hurt which is always a possibility or if his play declines or does not improve like some think it will. I get the bet on yourself aspect, but pretty risky\foolish IMO, especially IF POR is offering that 4yr/$89, which given Cronin's history I am sure they are.

I say we offer 4/$62M and use the extra $5M for more urinals in the bathroom. Then we can put his picture all around the bathrooms with the tagline "Camaras Allowed!".

PJ Washington just got extended at 4/90 - another ballpark area for Toumani? which fits near the max offer we can make. Or is Toumani enough better than PJ that he deserves a good bit
more?

Dundon needs to create a new LLC for feeding the nutria down on the Willamette that Tou can be partner in it and get 30mil over 5yrs off the books for "marketing".

IMO, Camara is a little better. Washington has an edge on offense and the boards; Camara a big edge on defense

Just thinking out loud, sharing a weak theory.

The new CBA is changing pay scales. To be able to floor a team that can compete for a ring. Pay scales may start to take on a corporate look.

By this I mean. Players will be paid based on their slot or position on the team, rather than potential.

Example. The #2 option pay range would be higher then the #4 option, which would pay more than a bench specialist.

To move up to a higher pay range, a player would need to earn a higher slot on the team.

Not sure this makes sense. But, a players pay will be closer to his actual worth to HIS team. Not what other teams are paying their players.

The fastest way for a team to eliminate themselves from being a contender, is to overpay based on hype or potential. Such as giving a max contract to a fringe all-star. Their slot on the team is only worth so much. Paying anymore will hurt the teams chance to compete for a ring.

Lots of holes in this theory, but I believe this is the direction the NBA pay scales are moving to.

The question remains. What is Toumani's slot on the Blazers, and what is that slot worth to the Blazers?
