we were in the midst of what could have been one of the greatest seasons of all time to be ruined by injuries. The 1977-78 team was even better than the one that won the championship, and they almost certainly would have won the NBA title that year if not for the injuries suffered by Walton, Gross, Lloyd Neal, Dave Twardzik and Maurice Lucas, most of them at the same time.

So to commemorate some of what this team did, I figured I'd post this up for comments, photos, and game summaries.

Since it's close enough to midnight, here's what happened on January 17, 1978:

@Buffalo Braves 94
Blazers 96

Portland's record moved to 34-6 for the season, their second win in a row on the third game of their Eastern swing. This win put the Blazers just ahead of the pace to win a then-record 69 games for the season. They were averaging scoring 110 points per game (would have finished the season 8th best in the league if they maintained the pace) and gave up 101ppg, which not only was the best in the league but was the best by almost two points per game.

Unfortunately, I can't find a box score for the game, but I can tell you with almost complete certainty that the player who led the Blazers in scoring was wearing short shorts.

It was also 30 years ago today Sgt Pepper told the band to play!
Talk about showing your age Odd I remember that team like it was yesterday people forget how great they were 50-10 I believe before the injurys hit. Believe me when I say watching that team was some of my greatest memories, in fact watching the baby blazers reminds me of those two great years!
