as far as the bargain rate, this summer would be the time for portland to sign frye, if that's what they intend to do. Assuming of course that Frye is willind to sign a contract for 3-4 million/year.
If these latest trades illustrate anything, it's that having several players signed to contracts below the MLE can be good trade leverage, especially if they are near-expiring contracts.
I agree that we should try to sign him to a modest extension this summer. I was speaking to someone who works for PTB and he said Frye and his mother both spoke to KP about wanting to stay in Portland for a long time. Channing absolutely loves this town and he's already talking about retiring here. I could really see him going for a deal like the one Travis signed last summer.
On your last point... I guess the irony of players like Travis signing agreeable deals with their teams is that it makes them very desirable trading chips. Travis and his next two years at 4 per must look pretty good around the league right now.

If frye was willing to sign a 3-4 million a year deal, it may be worth it to portland. He does a decent job of playing either C/PF in a majority of games. He doesn't try to force up a lot of bad shots and he works hard on the boards. He also would be about the last guy to cause in locker room problems. And he still is of the age where he can improve.
And yes...he would become a trading asset but that's the way it goes. Portland can't have a team of supersters...they need some role players and Frye could be an effective one.
