The Shaq-Joel foul could have been a no call if the bumping and pushing initiated by Joel after Shaq beat him to position under the basket didn't cause Shaq to miss the rebound. Think about it if the roles were reversed. What if Joel anticipated the shot and out hustled Shaq to get position under the basket, then Shaq arriving under the basket late started bumping and pushing Joel so that Joel would miss the rebound and Suns got the ball. We would be crying for a foul against Shaq. The key to the play is Shaq beat Joel to the prime rebounding position and then Joel initiated the contact in an attempt to keep Shaq from the rebound.

The goaltending call was an obvious goaltend. Our announcers and the reporters from the Oregonian said it wasn't goaltending because the ball wasn't on the rim but apparently, they don't know the rules. The ball doesn't have to be on the rim. If any part of the ball is inside the imaginary cylinder above the rim, it is basket interference. Frye tapped the ball just after it came off the rim but was still inside the imaginary cylinder.

Well, if the refs are a part of the game (which they are)
then its smart to put the pressure on them to make calls
for you. The best way to do this is to be the aggressor.. .
This doesnt happen with one game, it happens over many,
many games, sometimes it takes seasons. NBA refs make
calls by reputation, yes it shouldnt be that way but it is.. .
The Blazers are known for being young & soft. 'Til that
changes then expect the refs to give the majority of
the calls to the other team, unless their rep is worse.
