Well the topic is worded a bit wrong, i konw you guys arnt in salery cap hell....unlike some teams....
Anyways, I remember an article a few days ago, saying that Portland may be looking to trade ALL of their draft picks this up and coming draft (think their were like 4 or w.e in total)
Anyways, how does this deal sound?
Knicks trade:
Stephon Marbury(expiring)
Malik Rose(Expiring)
for
Darius Miles
Joel Pryzbilla
Raef Lafrentz
1rst round pick
Clears up lots of cap space so u guys can pay for all of your youngins. Those are the 3 biggest contracts on the team, and the only 1 who really contributs is Joel. I talked this trade over with a buddy of mine who is a blazer fan and he said it was decent.
That first trade probably wouldnt be accepted, but i figured 2 big expiring contracts might of been enough.
Then this deal.
marbury
Renaldo Balkman
For
Darius Miles
Raef Lafrentz
1rst round pick
is what i mentioned to him next, and he said he would do that trade in a secound. although he would much rather have Lee because i guess portland lacks rebounding, then he said with Oden next year, it shouldnt be a problem.
What do u guys think? obviously the 2nd trade is more apealing, first trade frees up more cap.
Edit: I just remember u guys bought out Francis, maybe we could take francis's contract back for marburys if that would be more apealing?
How bad does portland need cap relief?

About a week ago I think there would probably be a 50/50 split. The biggest thing a week ago would have been the pick in both deals.
Now though, Miles is set to visit a league doctor about whether his injuries are career ending. If they are ruled as such his money is removed from the salary cap. Obviously Portland still needs to pay money to Miles, but he's not the type of owner that would sacrifice a pick to save money.
With that in mind, I don't see Portland having any interest. Raef and Miles will be removed from cap considerations when Portland is ready to make their big '09 spending spree. The pick and Przybilla both take up cap space, but since Joel is a very good contributor and the pick could very well be too I don't see Portland sweating bullets over that.

also, i remember when Allan Houston had retired due to injury, his salery was still counted towards the cap. I don't see why Miles wouldnt be. (im about 90% sure on that)
I don't think Francis' cap number can be traded because he has been bought out. That money has already been spent. Miles' salary won't count against the cap if he retires. I don't know how it works beyond that, but I believe the league's insurance policy will pay at least a portion of it.
Marbury and Lafrentz salaries expire at the same time, so it wouldn't make sense for Portland unless Miles was going to count against their cap. Even then sacrificing what will probably be their last high-mid first round pick for a long time may be too high a price to pay. The trade would essentially be the Knicks taking on $9 mil in 09/10 for a 1st round pick. Perhaps the Blazers would do it for two of their second round picks.

Portland can' trade Francis' contract. You can only trade players, not their contracts.
I'd still be hesitant to go for the first trade because I don't see Balkman filling a real need that we have. If the pick's included I'd insist on David Lee, if not I'd be happy to do the deal straight up - Marbury for LaFrentz and Miles - or with a couple of second rounders. Marbury would be bought out of course.

Apparently it's just the way that the medical retirement works now. Not sure if it's different now than it was then

Should the doctor determine he can't play, the Blazers can waive Miles and the remaining salary would come off the team's cap after two years. However, if he gets picked up by another team and plays in 10 games over the next two seasons, the money would not come off the cap.
So as long as he doesn't' get picked up and play 10 games I think Portland is fine. Even then I think Portland would be fine as they can re-apply to have his salary removed. No idea on the time frame on re-applying, but I would assume that even if Miles played 10 games next year, Portland could still re-apply and might still get the cap space in time for the '09 FA period. Either way, Miles is gone and Portland wouldn't have to give up any assets to free up a roster spot.

That's a good question.
On topic: There's a very good chance that before the end of the month we will know whether or not Miles injury will be ruled as career ending. If that happens we won't need to do any cap clearing trades.

I'm not sold on the idea of dumping Joel Przybilla's contract and Miles is quite possibly nearing medical retirement so I wouldn't do this deal. If this trade's solely for cap reasons, it makes some sense, but Joel will play a vital role backing Oden up next season (which he may need to do a lot of since Oden seems to have a knack for getting into foul trouble).
