The Blazer's Poison Pill?

Post#1 » by Jsun947 » Thu Apr 3, 2008 4:36 am

Is it just me or do we play our worst basketball in the 3rd quarter every game?

I'm going to try to compile some info to see what we score in the 3rd compared the other quarters. I'll also try to include point differential...

It's because other teams make adjustments at halftime, and we don't. I guess that comes with experience, but it's really frustrating.

The 3rd has been Portland death for atleast the last 2 seasons. Alot of it I attribute to lack of poise.

Or a lack of coaching.

I don't think it is lack of poise because the Blazers are very good in close games down the stretch and Brandon takes over and Nate stops coaching. It is when other coaches make adjustments at halftime that the Blazers seem to have difficulties and get boatraced in the 3rd.

Not to nag on you or anything but you spelled poison wrong in the thread title.

As for the thread topic, the Blazers definitely have a way of stinking it up in the third quarter and from what I remember, it goes back as far as earlier last season. I think this is a sign that Nate might need to change his rotation again.

i think tm hit it on the head, but I remember a few years back it was the 4th that killed us, the year before and during we had telfair I always wished games were only 3 quarters.

The results I get are actually shocking... The 3rd isn't our worst quarter, the 2nd is and by far....

Averages for all games
1st Quarter average 24.44 - Point Diff = +1.4
2nd Quarter average 22.79 - Point Diff = -2.01
3rd Quarter average 22.88 - Point Diff = -.68
4th Quarter average 24.09 - Point Diff = .13
Game average 94.1 - Point Diff = -2.31

Averages in loses only
1st Quarter average 22.89 - Point Diff = +.14
2nd Quarter average 21.92 - Point Diff = -3.89
3rd Quarter average 20.84 - Point Diff = -3.35
4th Quarter average 23.30 - Point Diff = -3.22
Game average 86.73 - Point Diff = -13.3

I'm not surprised by those numbers. I was thinking the 2nd quarter had been pretty bad anyway. And that's basically because since well before the all-star break, the "white unit" has been stinking it up in a lot of games. The 1st half of the 2nd quarter has been generally when the highest percentage of bench players have been on the floor.

As far as the 3rd quarter, the blazers have had problems there lately for sure. I find it amusing that some people were so quick to jump on Nate as being the reason, even before they knew if it's the case or if he's the cause.

Last night was a prime example. The Blazers were getting the same shots they were getting in the 1st half, they were simply missing shots. Meanwhile the Lakers were hitting shots...the same type of shots they were missing in the 1st half. I thought Blake didn't do a real good job of getting Portland into their offense quickly in the 3rd Q. Portland's shots seemed to come later in the shot clock and they had a few more rushed shots then they should have. I think at one time they were 5-19, and several of those misses were on open shots. If they shoot 8-19 or 9-19, it's a different game.

yeah, i've pointed out that in the last games, but if my mind doesn't betray me that has been a problem for the last couple of years.

i don't know if they are too relaxed after half time that it costs them to get back into game shape or that they don't get too well prepared and the other team does.

it's really frustrating.
