Every player has bad shooting games, unless all your shots are near the basket, off feeds from teammates after your man leaves to double. Melo is shooting a good percentage of the shots he is taking and he's not forcing anything. Efficiency stats don't account for the shots taken. In fact, efficiency stats are deliberately inaccurate in favor of players that draw fouls on shots near the basket. Melo could improve his efficiency if he didn't take long 2's, but we need him to take the long 2's he takes. We have only 2 other players that can get and make the shots Melo takes.
My only problem with Melo is he didn't play a game he was physically capable of playing but was mentally weak. I'm ok with having him as long as we have strong coattails to carry his mentally weak ass.
Efficiency stats are not "deliberately inaccurate", they are simply math. There's a reason the whole league has fallen in love with the 3pt shot. You say we "need Carmelo to take those long 2s". Based on what?
Efficiency stats are formulas and if the formula isn't constructed properly, the results are not useful. Sometimes the label put on stats doesn't correspond to what the formula is intended to calculate. Most often, the people drawing conclusions based on the stats are flawed in their logic and their conclusions are wrong.
Efficiency stats are deliberately inaccurate: This statement is referring to the common points/shot efficiency stat that is discussed. This formula needs accurate data and the data collected is not accurate. The key data is an attempted shot. Well, if a player attempts a shot and he is fouled, the attempt isn't counted unless the shot is made. Furthermore, FT's made are added to the players point total regardless if a shot is added to his attempts. This so called efficiency stat doesn't accurately measure a players efficiency to make the shots attempted because it doesn't count all the attempts.
3PT attempt is better than 2PT attempt: This is fine, but if true why is there no team that just takes 3PT shots?
Effective FG% is a deceptive stat, not because the data collection is flawed. The problem is not every 2PT attempt is the same and not every 3PT attempt is the same. 3PT attempts are closer to the same than 2's. Whiteside takes the most shots inside of 8ft and he makes a significantly better percentage of his shots inside 8ft than Lillard does. However, a large number of Whitesides shots are open and setup, very easy to make. Lillard's shots inside 8ft are almost all created by penetration and are heavily defended. CJ and Melo take a large number of shots between 8-16ft from basket and they make them at a rate better than the rest of the team, but their percentage is between 42-47%, which isn't as good as shooting percentages inside of 8ft.
Melo is one of our best players at getting and making a good shot. When Melo shots, it's usually the best shot we can get and his rate at making his shots if good relative to the specific shot taken.
