Real chance he's has a real chance at the HC job if Stotts gets fired, especially if they strike out with a big
splash hire

What is a big splash hire? Recycling the remaining Van Gundy?Norm2953 wrote:Real chance he's has a real chance at the HC job if Stotts gets fired, especially if they strike out with a big

Even if Stotts is not dismissed, it would be good to bring Vanterpool back as Associate Head Coach and Designated Coach. So if the Blazers start poorly, he can replace Stotts then. Or if the Blazers do well, then he replaces Stotts next year when the contract ends and Stotts doesn't want to extend (to resign or for something different in NBA).

Pringles Man made a lot of sense when the team wasn't playing defense. But with the team clicking, the "Fire Stotts!" chants should probably wait to see how the playoffs go.
Totally onboard with bringing Vanterpool back as an assistant. But if he left the first time because he didn't see career advancement opportunities, he'd likely be just a rental.

Re: Bring back Vanterpool?
I mean the ownership seems to be waiting to see how these playoffs go before firing Stotts.
So even if the fans chant that it won't shift the decision. If the Blazers can look competitive in the playoffs we might see Stotts retained.
I have a hard time seeing Stotts retained if the Blazers get destroyed by the Nuggets.

Re: Bring back Vanterpool?
I think the Blazers need to go a long ways in the playoffs for Stotts to keep his job. That just may mean the Finals. How do you fire a guy that takes the team to the Finals, win or lose? I don't know if the Conference Finals are even enough. Perhaps???

There is a HC thread on the trade board and it was mentioned Portland could hire Ime Udoka but he's not
the big splash management want to do. Almost certain whoever is named the next coach will have to have
the approval of Dame

Re: Bring back Vanterpool?
Blazers aren't expected to beat Nuggets. All the odds makers have Nuggets the favorite to win. Nuggets have the best player in the series and a lot of talent to support him, even without Murray.
As of now, Stotts is doing a great job. He has always had the team prepared with a great game plan and the players play hard for him. I hope Stotts is back, but who knows.
Blazers success these playoffs and the near future will be determined by the play of Lillard. Lillard has to defeat traping defenses and utilize his teammates better. CJ, Powell, Nurk, RoCo, Melo, Simons, and Kanter have to defend, rebound, and finish plays. This could be the last run for this team, unless they do something that proves they deserve another year. Lillard, in particular, needs to prove he can carry his own team. Or, what's the point of paying the expense to keep it rolling.

Re: Bring back Vanterpool?
Lillard passes the ball plenty only 6 players in the entirety of the NBA have more assists per game this year than Lillard. Acting like Lillard is some ball hog that takes way too many shots is a joke, especially when this team has a top notch offense mostly due to Lillard.
Defense is the biggest problem for the Blazers not offense, if this team had a top 5 defense and still retained it's top 2 offense we would be one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

That is what my scheme attempts to meliorate. It would not be temporary. He would be theBlazer new head coach once Stotts' persent contract end next season or during next season.JasonStern wrote:Epicurus wrote:What is a big splash hire? I want Lillard to hog the ball more if he gets an easy shot and scores. I want him to hog the ball less if he isn't getting easy shots because he is being heavily defended. I don't care how the points are scored. Blazers would improve with better game management, the same way Suns improved with CP3's game management. Or, how Lakers improve with LeBron's game management.
Defense is the problem. Great defense is scoring 1 more point than the opponent. Great defense starts with getting easy shots on offense and ends with getting a rebound or turnover on defense. Our biggest problem on defense is the shots we take on offense. A missed shot on offense is a terrible way to start out on defense. Offensive possessions that begin with anything other than an inbounded pass, have the highest PPP conversion rate because the offense has a chance of catching the opponent with an unbalanced floor or with mismatches that favor the offense.
Basketball doesn't neatly divide into offense and defense, as it does in other sports. Most of basketball is transitioning between the baskets. The team that wins is the team that understands how it can gain an advantage.
