Re: 2019 Off-Season Questions
Blazers should definitely explore trade market for CJ this summer and seriously consider an offer if they can something that has better trade value.
Because CJ's $27/per year deal is barely moveable.. And his impact on the game isn't close be that heavy as his salary is.

I wonder if we could swing Cousins. I think he looks at the big payday we are getting Kanter and if he goes for another 1 year rental deal like he did with the warriors, if he could find a better match than us.

Does his agent change his mind about having two clients on the same team playing the same position (Nurk and Boogie)?

Re: 2019 Off-Season Questions
The Blazers should do everything possible to trade Evan Turner. Throw in the draft pick and/or throw in Trent Jr. Make it happen. Would they have enough to resign Hood, Curry, Layman, and Kanter if they could move Turner? Would they be able to utilize the MLE or would they lose that if they dropped below the salary cap? (Granted, I don't know if they would drop below the cap or not by trading Turner)

Re: 2019 Off-Season Questions
Not totally Blazer related, but can be applied to Portland's situation with roster building. This is from David Griffin's introductory presser in New Orleans....
That's something I've been preaching ad nauseam on RealGM.
David Griffin: "In team-building, everybody has gotten really lazy in this area. (The flawed mindset is) binary: You have to be either terrible and tank, or you have to win this championship. The reality is that’s not how this works. We have to make small wins every day."
That's something I've been preaching ad nauseam on RealGM.

Will the Blazers post season draw any minimum salary experienced free agents like has happened with the Lakers, Spurs, Warriors, etc.?

The Blazers may need to fill the entire bench pending free agency, particularly if Aminu, Kanter, Curry, Hood, and Layman all go away.

I think the best case scenario is attaching our draft pick to ET and clearing enough space to sign two of Hood / Curry / Layman / Kanter. PDX isn't close to dropping below the cap, but moving ET could allow us to use the non-taxpayer MLE which is 9.07M vs 5.60M. That difference of 3.47M likely is the difference between retaining one of the non-bird guys or two. And to me that's well worth attaching the 2019 R1 to ensure.
Realistically, this is the most optimistic scenario. I am not 100% sure on the cap but my basic understanding has the below attainable:
On draft night PDX trades Evan Turner and #25 to Atlanta (Or whomever) for a protected future R2 to get below the tax apron of 129.817M.
Al-Fariq Aminu is resigned as a bird-rights FA. I think he gets considerably more than people expect, likely something starting around 12M.
After giving such a large deal to Aminu, they let Layman walk after a poor team offers him a deal that IMO would likely start around 7M per season.
Since PDX is below the tax apron, they get the MLE at 9.07M rather than 5.60M. They split this amount between Seth Curry and Rodney Hood.
They somehow convince Enes Kanter that a year as a starter and future bird rights are worth staying here in the culture he seems to love, he has already made tens of millions and on top of that, the center market is quite saturated this offseason, somehow we get him to sign for the Bi-Annual Exception of 3.55M for a single season and have a under the table deal to resign him with a nice raise in 2020.
The above is absolutely the ideal scenario, but it wont happen. I can see #25 not being enough to move ET, I can see Aminu getting some suprising offers at like 15M per season, I can see Curry and Hood both taking the money as neither have been paid and I can see Kanter balking at anything less than the MLE (Although honestly, I could see Kanter taking a lowball, team friendly offer before any of these other guys, he has made tons already while Layman, Hood and Curry have made squat. And Kanter is the most eccentric to boot)
Who knows, but we need to enjoy this ride while we can. A lot of good players and even better people wont be on the Blazers next season. Its a bummer but its life.

Jodie Allen update...
https://seahawkswire.usatoday.com/2019/04/23/seahawks-owner-jody-allen-very-excited-nfl-draft-process/
Is it possible Jody may just keep the teams instead of selling them and try to run them as Paul would have?

Jody is certainly keeping herself busy, as one of the other ventures she took over – the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers – are in the middle of a playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
While Jody may not be the diehard sports fan that Paul is, it’s clear she has a passion for these projects – which is great news for the Seahawks.

It's certainly a possibility. At least as long as they're competitive. This would be great news for Portland. I could see her holding on to them while they're competing for championships with Dame, but as soon as a down turn hits, and it's time to reset, look to sell. Maybe attending those first 2 playoff games sparked a new fan in her. Lets hope

From a business perspective you do the opposite. Sell high.

Re: 2019 Off-Season Questions
Honestly, if Curry finds greener pastures and we have used the exception, leaving us with minimum offers, I wouldn't be exposed to bringing Stauskas back. Ideally Simons wins the training camp battle for that spot, but having Nik as a backup plan isn't bad when you look at the limits of having the minimum to offer.
Right now my favorite replacement for Curry, should he leave, is Troy Daniels at the Bi-Annual Exception.

Yeah I get that, but it doesn't seem like she's overly concerned about that, as it's been 6 months, and not a word about selling has been whispered. Maybe she's just taking her time quietly finding a buyer. I know dealing with an estate that size has got to take an extremely long time

Owning a sports team for multibillionaries is a luxury, prestige good. Normal market perspectives aren't necessarily governing in such cases.Renegade wrote:Fitz303 wrote:I could see her holding on to them while they're competing for championships with Dame, but as soon as a down turn hits, and it's time to reset, look to sell.

Would you guys trade anfernee Simon's to the wolves for the no. 10 pick? You guys draft Jaxson Hayes or maybe take a gamble on Bol Bol

That's not totally true. I believe it was on Bill Simmons Podcast where he said something to the effect of "its one of the worst kept secrets in the league that the team [the Blazers] is for sale". How accurate he is on that... who knows, but there has been some rumblings, but the fact that there's been next to nothing from the local reporters makes me skeptical of Simmons' comment.

In a heartbeat. Simons has potential, but if you can flip a mid-20's FRP into a Top 10 FRP in a year, I think you do that.
I'd actually prefer it be part of a 3 team deal though with the #10 pick getting flipped to another team for a vet player.
Maybe something with Cleveland and Love coming back to Portland.
Turner, Okogie (or whatever filler player from MIN) and #10 to Cleveland
Love to Portland
Simons to Minnesota
Works under the checker and if the Wolves are really interested in Simons for #10, than I think that works for each team involved.

I probably would, even though I'm not high on this crop of players and I wouldn't take either of those players.
Return to Portland Trail Blazers
